There are nuggets of gold in what and how Dr. Ehrman presents the information. Regarding David Koresh and the FBI and ATF raid in Waco TX in 1983: "...the group of Davidians were following what they understood to be divine principles laid out in the book of Revelations. They saw the current situation as a fulfillment of the signs." (pg.86)
The author is somewhat generous toward believers, in that he expresses that a literal interpretation exists, while as the same time exposes the limited perspective of those who hold that view.
Recommended reading for both believers and non-believers....more

At one point one of the nurses, to emphasize something she'd just said, put her hand up with index finger extended and with a flourish stated "I have thus spoken!". After a few silent seconds I calmly replied "Also Sprach Zarathustra". Everyone was silent again, followed by several persons saying "What?" and "What did you say?"... The doctor there that afternoon looked around at the company, looked over at me and stated "They'll understand... in about the year 2001." I looked at him, nodded my head slowly in his direction, and replied "Well played, sir. Well played", smiled, and turned and walked out of the room.
Anyway, having known that Richard Strauss's orchestral composition by that name, and that it was the overarching theme music used in Kubrick's movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" is probably not general knowledge, but both myself and the doctor that afternoon knew, and it was a good joke to have play out.
This was the first time that I've read this work by Nietzche. I've read excerpts from others, but never this full 'prose poem' (if that is what it is...). I will agree with several of the commenters here on Goodreads... it's like the story of Jesus, but cooler.
It's something that needed to be read, to further my self-imposed, self-set, endeavor to liberally increase my breadth of literary and social knowledge. It was my time to read it....more

WhileFrom Kant to Marx to Hegel, this collection of writings by the mid-20th century philosopher Herbert Marcuse was enjoyable and thought-provoking. While many of the passages I had to read 3 or more times in order to understand them, due to phrasing, pacing, and use of words and concepts not familiar to me, I have now finished with a respect for this thinker, and those who came before and after, in critiquing the social and cultural framework of the Western civilization in which we live.

The author attempted to cram too much content, attempted to cover to many subjects, within this one publication, while mining other publications for supporting materials. One thing I noticed that was aggravating was that the index was not complete... I'd look for a reference to a person's name and it wasn't in the index... not in the bibliography either. As a biological treatise to support the idea that plants do communication with each other by sundry means, it failed. As an apology for the use and consumption of psychedelic compounds, it fails. As a primer for psychological and sociological counseling and 'treatment' of a range of personality symptoms, I cannot offer my opinion. I spent too much time, over too long of a period of time, completing the read of this....more

Contemplations on mankind's sources of happiness and discontent, and ruminations concerning origins of error and evils within civilization. Well worth the several months that it took me to read through this Volume 1 of d'Holbach's work from 1770. I found that I needed to read nearly every paragraph at least 2 if not 3 or 4 times to sound out the cadence, the phrasing, and the intent of many of the passages.
I'm fairly certain that the publisher/printer of the two volumes of this work that I purchased several years ago is no longer in business... the website listed on the title page, with the publishing date of 2007, has the website of the company when accessing the URL, either directly or from the link on what appears to be an inactive Facebook page, only takes one to a screen stating "This domain is PARKED"....more

I did a quick go-through after I'd read all of the questions just to see... of the 280 or so individuals who submitted questions, I've read books by at least 14, have signed copies representative works by two of them (and also met a third), and have perused the blogs to which 3 other either maintain themselves or contribute to. A quick read, but I stretched it out over several weeks.

At least twice in this work the author stated that Man is distinct from animals, and in that he is in a matter of degrees. But the author’s statement At least twice in this work the author stated that Man is distinct from animals, and in that he is in a matter of degrees. But the author’s statement in the second chapter (pg.24) that it is only Man that has “… the capacity to determine in advance an end upon which his actions follow” gave me pause to step back and deeply read this work three times before writing this review. Given that the current view, at least among primatologists studying man’s cousins, leans to the existence of a range of sentient actions, as intimated in that statement, over a broad range of those ‘higher’ mammals the authors view of Man as being ‘created’ or existing separately from other animals is a spurious notion. And if we include cephalopods the range is extended.
Seeing that the author is a theologian, with a specialty in the subject matter of this lecture turned short book, it’s not surprising that he would elevate ‘man’ above other animals in his endeavor to support his thesis. But for me, with an education and background in the biological sciences, that statement had a negative effect over the whole of the work. Yes I can see how the work of Aquinas, and Professor Boyle’s treatment of it, can support a way of thinking, a way of action, and a way of life, that aligns the individual with that theistic aspect of religion.
I was raised in a Protestant denomination and currently consider myself a humanist… as such I do try to enrich my personal views on a wide range of topics and this short book was lent to me by my son. I appreciate that, and find that the author’s work might have more impact on a person more in tune to a Catholic theology rather than my former Protestant one. ...more
