Ten years ago I had gotten into The Watchmen, and the first three volumes of Gaiman's Sandman series (I've started re-reading them to catch up and continue), and most recently have been digging Joe Hill's excellent Locke and Key series.
A while back I had read a review expounding the virtues of Ed Brubaker. I can't remember what comic or who did it, might have been Stephen, but I tucked that name in my head and set out a plan to read him.
Gotham Central intriqued me. Here's a series about Gotham's police force, very much a Hill Street Blues feel to it, except for one minor item: the ever present resentment towards Batman for showing them up. Batman is a very minor character here, and the stories focus on the men and women in blue and their cases. It's very good stuff, great dialogue The artwork is a little more scratchy than I'm accustomed to, but this makes the overall package all the more gritty, so it's all good.
