My 12-year-old listened to the whole thing with me and seemed to enjoy it. He kept asking for the next episode. But he did remark that he thought it would be better as a show noting the frequent use of the phrase "if you look over here." Yeah, we can't see it. It's an audiobook. ...more

I love listening to funny books with my 12-year-old. It was so much fun for me to be back with these favorite characters and get to enjoy them with him. He read all the other Rick Riordan books on his own, but since I hadn't read this one yet, we listened together.
The premise of this book is hilarious. Percy has to do a quest in order to get a recommendation letter for college. The hoops these demigods have to jump through. ...more

Great fun. I love Jasper Fforde. I reread Shades of Grey two summers ago, so it was fairly fresh in my mind, and the continuity, even after all these years, is great. Red Side Story picks up where we left off. Jane and Eddie have many hilarious scenes together. We learn a lot of more about this very odd world in this book, and it's full of Ffordian wit and humor.
I think the series is slotted to be a trilogy, but the ending to this book felt more complete than the ending of Shades of Grey (thank goodness). That fifteen-year cliffhanger was a long time to dangle. ...more

Annie Adams' Great Aunt Frances has finally been murdered, fulfilling the prophecy she received as a teenager in 1965. For decades Frances was obsessed with solving the murder that had yet to occur. Now it's Annie's turn to try.
I thought this was pretty fun. It's not a genre I typically read, so it was a nice change of pace. I got through it really quickly. I enjoyed the dual timeline. I think I'd read the sequel. ...more

HorDaniella Mestyankey Young was raised in the Children of God. I did not know anything about this group. It was a lot. It was hard to read at times. Horribly abusive situation.
The second half of the book is about Daniella's adult life after she left the Children of God at 15 (remarkable, really). Many have complained about how so much of the book is about the military and Daniella's adult life. But I think so much of her experience was influenced by her upbringing. Leaving a cult is a lifelong process. ...more

This book is sad, especially as Wren's backstory is revealed, but I really liked how it ended. The impossible is tempered by the character's realistic emotions and reactions to the situations they face....more

I like that this book took me to an area impacted by WWII that doesn't get as much play in WWII fiction. It did a nice job with the conflict with the Soviets post-war, which I liked. I found the toggling between the two perspectives and the move back and forth in time a bit confusing. It threw me off in terms of momentum too. ...more

I've been pretty fascinated by Shackleton's shipwreck since my study abroad stint in London in 200 when I saw the James Caird.
This book is so well written. Jennifer Armstrong does such a good job evoking the imagery of the South Pole, which feels essential for a book like this. The narrator also was great. ...more
