I loved the premise of the story, but at times I felt pacing was slow. I also didn’t understand how Briseis and her two moms’ could be so trusting while in a new place. They are from Brooklyn and should know better. As the story progressed I pretty much figured out the plot, but there was a scene at the end that I didn’t expect and I do look forward to seeing how this plays out in the next book. Sophomore novels are tricky, but overall I did enjoy this story!...more
Not going to lie Bree worked my last nerve in this book. Then I had to remind myself she’s 16 and give her a pass. The pacing of the story c3.5 stars
Not going to lie Bree worked my last nerve in this book. Then I had to remind myself she’s 16 and give her a pass. The pacing of the story could have been better as it did stall at times. The action scenes especially towards the end had me on the edge of my seat. This story tackles everyday racism us Black people face in America. That ending was something else and I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Sophia was strong willed and assertive. I loved that she didn’t want to get in line, know her place and live her life serving a man or anyone. The story touched on a lot of topics especially the treatment of young girls and women. The author created a world that was very detailed and I could see everything playing out in my head as I read. There is a twist that took me by surprise and I didn’t see that coming at all. I do wish the ending was longer. I would have liked more in that aspect. Overall this was a good book and I would read another book by this author. ...more

I really enjoyed this story written by Claribel Ortega even though I am not the intended target audience. The book was nicely written, family focused and introduce me into a new culture filled with a rich history. While reading, I felt like I was in the story fighting along with the squad. Some but not many of the phrases are written in Spanish so I did have to break out Google translate but that made the story even more interesting. It was nice reading about Lucely and Syd being kids running around on bikes and having adventures. Reminds me of my youth. This would be a nice book to read around Halloween. ...more

Hannah is a teen witch living in Salem. There have been some scary things happening and she is doing her best to find out who is behind the dark magic. Hannah is a typical teen with ex girlfriend drama. I loved that the book represents the LGBT+ community but I would have loved if we have more characters of color. I think we had one and she was a very minor character in the story. At times I felt this book was a little slow pacing wise but overall I did enjoy the story. I liked the characters. There were several twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. That ending left me stunned. This was a solid debut for Isabel Sterling and I can’t wait to see what happens next! There is some subject matter that can trigger some readers.

I liked the story. Writing is very solid. Author gives a very vivid and detailed description of the surroundings and I felt like I was with Ryn and Ellis throughout their journey. Characters were a little bland for my liking at times but hints of their personality would peak through every now and again. I had to remind myself given the situation I could see why they are monotone. Ryn was a strong female lead which I loved. Didn’t take mess from anyone, especially during a time when women are supposed to submit to men. Would definitely read another book by this author. Not my normal genre but the story held my attention from the beginning to the end.
