I’m not really a memoir reader of people I’ve never heard of before, but something about this book made me want to read. This memoir was beyond heavy. Brian struggled with deeply internalized racism and is also dealing with abuse from his father. Being gay in the Black community is frowned upon especially if you’re a guy. You are expected to “be a man” and conduct yourself a certain and if you didn’t good luck. The whole time I listened this story I wanted to reach in and give Brian a hug. He longed and looked for acceptance in all the wrong places. I was happy at the end when he finally found some peace.

I laughed at some stories because I knew what was coming as I had been in those type of situations myself over the years. I also cringed because some of the stories took place in the late 2010’s and it’s like how ignorant can still be at this point in your life? SMDH. Then again it’s 2021 and things still aren’t better so I shouldn’t be surprised. This book did bring up some tough memories for me, but it’s nice to remember and see that I’m not alone. ...more

So here’s the thing, I love true crime tv shows and documentaries, but hardly read true crime books. This story was told in two points of view Tony and Liza. I preferred Costa’s point of view better. Costa was such a mystery to me. I googled him and he didn’t seem off, but clearly something was wrong. There wasn’t any abuse suffered by the hands of his parents. So trying to figure what caused him to kill was fascinating. There was one incident that happen when he was older and Costa was nonchalant about that event. Maybe that caused him to kill? Who know? Back then they didn’t have the resources and mental health services that they have today to really diagnose him properly.
Liza’s point of view felt too family drama for me and I was hoping for more of her and Tony. They did have a few outings, but I thought would be more significant than how it was being billed.
Mentions of child abuse, killing of small animals, xenophobia, homophobia....more

All I can say is that this book needs to be required reading in all schools! As an adult I found this book to be very informative. This book had me highlighting, tabbing pages and researching certain events/people on the internet as well. After reading this book I can’t wait for the original Stamped book to arrive in the mail.

Whew. I had to put the book down after reading this part of the book. As a Black woman in America, I know this all too well. ...more

One of my reading goals for the year is to read more true crime stories.
I watch a lot of crime shows and always wonder what made serial killers tick but I don’t think I have the stomach to do this is real life so I’ll just watch/read about it instead.
As soon as I started this book I was captivated from the very beginning. I like that this book is told in the killers point of view as well. I must say it was chilling to read him discussing the murders with no emotion or remorse. He murdered 4 people and it’s just like a day in the park for him. He even went out and got food afterwards. It’s scary.
The story also showcases mental health issues, how they are treated and diagnosed in the prison system and mental hospitals. That part was shocking but I shouldn’t be too surprised. Also in my humble opinion just because someone has mental health issues doesn’t make them a killer. Some people are just plain evil. I felt the translation for the book was good and I was able to follow along with ease. If you’re a fan of true crime shows be sure to check this book out!
Triggers: Animal cruelty.
