It is hard to rate this because I am so left feeling icky and unsatisfied. I would have been okay with the chapters being linked together better. If you wanted Sci-Fi, you could probably have been more engrossed in an episode of Star Trek. If you want romance, I'd look at any list on GoodReads designated for that type of reading. Nine takes on the alias of Stanley before his capture, and it almost would have been better as a log in to a diary instead of the point of view chapters which mesh with the first book in the I Am Number Four series. Unfortunately, I wasn't consulted on that decision so I point it as something which doesn't work. You can breeze right through it in an afternoon. It doesn't mean I want to be told every little thing that happens with the Mogadorians rather than shown....more

I'm glad I read this installment. Despite the weirdness with the ghosts and memories, it certainly has some promise for where the author wants to go with the main series. Reading about trueborns or legacies or wars to be fought and won, I feel like there are too many barebones similarities to Game of Thrones to make it uniquely its own story. Chapters, though short, have a tendency to stop in the middle of an action. It shouldn't be surprising that it ends on a cliffhanger....more

It really is something to read about another's struggles to learn a language and teach in a foreign school while being limited to two years in the Peace Corps. We become aware of the struggles even more when we try to access our own goals in doing anything. Sometimes the book trips into psychological case study and other times it glosses over many things. Because it is in the nonfiction category and it has a hint of investigative journalism/inquiry, I don't feel out of place saying that there could have been more to contribute on the history of China's Qing Dynasty, Cultural Revolution, Reform and Opening, and the removal of the landlords.

They say the narrator is unreliable, and no one could prove anything without colluding. This novel came out a whole decade before Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell, and yet, I see some similarity in the style of the work. As it is unlike Jane Eyre in many respects, you can't help seeing some happenings that are very reminiscent. There are some nitpicky things about the differences between Catholics and Protestants, but it might come down to a novel that wants to push boundaries and keep walls intact....more
