It inspired me to faithfully wait for The Winter King, and sadly get heavily disappointed with the result. After a magical series of this epic caliber, we got saddled with an average fantasy with extremely limited supernatural elements. Seriously, it read like a bubblegum romance - a bodice ripper with some fish tossed in and a bit of magic of winter...kinda like Frozen with sushi... I loved The concept of the Fay in Tairen Soul, i loved the dedication and drive that pushed an almost immortal race to look for fragility. I loved how they celebrated the loneliness of their long existence because they would have maybe gotten the chance of meeting who they were supposed to be with. Wilson, really outdid herself with this one I have to say. One of my fave series of all time....more

Why read this?
Because – there was a very particular troll that inspired me to change my bookshelf. See, a while back I was having a convo with a friend about binge buying books. I stay up late on particular evenings when I feel inspired and splurge on bunches of books (biggest bulk buy would be 23 I think) and saying how I love to whisper sweet nothings to my e-reader's ear late at night while my husband snores for England. So this someone I've never met barges in the convo in the way people on internet do – read something and interpret that it's there specifically for them and hijack the conversation. She's all like – well I think this, and I think that, yap yap yap - and people who choose e-readers over real books are not readers at all. On that I've eloquently responded – blow me. But the ass-rash did get me thinking about why I love my e-reader and why I love genuine books, and most importantly why I don't have so many real deals around the house. They are bulky, they are heavy, they take up shitloads of space and are a dust magnet. So yeah, the e-reader is practical but I still love my books. So! I have decided to accumulate only stuff I have read, really liked and create a special bookshelf dedicated to my treasures in my own house. So out went all the old shit and the selection began.... I now possess a drool worthy cabinet dedicated to my perversions. YES!
Now about the book.
This was one of my go to favorite fantasies of all time. I just didn't expect to enjoy Tairen Soul as much as I did when I read it for the very first time. The magic was wonderful, the story inspiring, and the series remained in my good memories for a very long time. TBH I have never expected to find it in print at all, but I did, completely by accident and got the entire series for a steal. So now, late at night I can pinch a few pages here and there and truly enjoy my evening until my schedule stabilises. I liked it the first time, I love it now. :)...more
Dunno about you, but even after i re-read this, i got the same feeling. I've expected far more from Dmitri. Not as a badass, but as a lover. Really? IDunno about you, but even after i re-read this, i got the same feeling. I've expected far more from Dmitri. Not as a badass, but as a lover. Really? I mean REALLY? Is that all we get? How very...not original. That honey move? [image] ...more

Now that the series has progressed, and sadly taken a nosedive, i see the subtle nuances i haven't really noticed before.
Nalini Singh originally intended for this series to have a subtly different flavor then it became. Happily i can say i am grateful it didn't turn out to be one of those one novel per MC types, because sometimes a certain character just deserves some more depth. Not every story can fit in one scroll, and not every character deserves a cheesy HEA.
The reason i lost faith in this series is a sad one. Firstly i am a supporter of common sense, then a supporter of women's rights. As such i will not scream till i froth at the mouth at every story i read where a woman meets a dominant male, or bare my tits in an attempt to fight the patriarchy every time i read a story in witch a woman needs to be saved.
Guild Hunter lacks in two massive departments - firstly, The Tortured Soul Syndrome. Every character is abused, every character needs saving. Every single character is running from their pasts. Yes, i understand that if you live for thousands of years, you are bound to experience some ill shit, that is never in dispute. What got me was that every character was somehow portrayed in a same way. So much so that it started to take away from the originality and the uniqueness of every character in this series. I knew what the dynamic between characters is going to be like, regardless of the story and that simply put me off. All of the women, and I mean ALL of them are in a need of saving, and running away from their romantic interests. And ALL of the guys are super-duper-macho-kick-ass-one-liner-spewing-uber-fighting-bad-boys-but-not-really. Urgh.
Second - Sense of Humor. You would think that these angels would learn how to tell a fucking joke, being old as dirt and all....but no,every time the angels speak be like... [image]
