Legend (Legend, #1)

As far as the dystopian genre goes I'd say this is right up there, in the top 20s somewhere. It could be better though.
I started this book three times over months and each time I lost interest in the first few chapters. No idea why. I didn't consciously put it down, it just didn't grab me from the start... So this time around (4th) I tried the audiobook and that helped get me over the slump. So if you have trouble starting out, hang in there, it picks up.
Pros:
1. Lots of action
2. Dystopia
3. Good premise
4. A few surprises
5. Strong hero and heroine. I especially liked the parkour hero and would have liked to have seen more ...
6. What makes this book different for me is that it STARTS out with the hero being an established bad-ass rebel. This is more about what the government does to catch him. Different from others in this genre.
Cons:
1. Somewhat predictable.
2. I didn't care much about the characters. I was shocked when some people died, but it didn't have much of an impact, it didn't move me emotionally. This was also a problem with the main characters, I didn't care. Maybe she could have taken a bit more time and developed their personalities and relationships. Some more inner turmoil would have been good.
3. This is really a minor problem, but I would have liked a bit more ambiguity with some of the characters - specifically Thomas. Instead he was cookie cut.
4. SHOW, don't tell. This is a problem that is creeping up more and more!
In spite of the issues I had with this book, it was a fun read overall.
A must-read if you like this genre.
