After reading this book, I went to the review section and discovered this book has elicited some of the strongest reactions of any book I have read. It seems that readers either love this book or hate it. Put me in the list of readers who believe this to be one of the best thrillers I have read this year. I admit to being a big fan of books that rely on unreliable narrators because the books are so unpredictable and much more entertaining to read. This book’s narrator,Amber, is an admitted liar and in a coma after being seriously injured in an incident she doesn’t remember. You don’t get much more unreliable than that.
The book is divided into three separate times frames: before the incident, now, and the diary entries from 20 years ago. All of these are narrated by Amber and are told the way she remembers or wishes it occurred. The story primarily centers on Amber’s relationships with various people in her life including her potentially psychotic sister, Claire, her husband, Paul and her stalking psychotic ex boyfriend, Edward. The book is ingenious in its twists and a couple of times I can honestly say everything I thought I knew about a character did a complete 180. That is a fun book to read. The controversial ending was so open ended it could be interpreted in a variety of ways. I loved it , and it made me want to go back and re-read the last chapter again to see what I missed. Brilliant is too weak a word to describe such an entertaining debut. I am definitely looking forward to Feeney’s 2nd book —- if it is half as good as the first i will still be satisfied.
