really liked it

I came into this with low expectations so I was pleasantly surprised that this book turned out to be a pretty solid spin-off. The central characters (Nikolai, Zoya, Nina) are much more compelling to read compared to how they were portrayed in the previous books - that includes Nina, whose story arc is much stronger. Bardugo continues her pattern of endearing characters and sharp dialogue. My main critique is that the book feels disconnected between Nikolai and Zoya VS Nina; it reads like two separate stories that are mashed together in one book, and therefore isn't as cohesive. I do think both stories are solid on their own though and assume that there will be more overlap in the next book. Not rating this 5 stars because it's not as addictive and charming as the Six of Crows duology and I don't find myself still thinking about it after I've finished, but I still enjoyed reading this.

Amber Nicole So glad to see someone not hating on this book. I thought it was entertaining and not at all deserving of the hate I keep seeing.

Sasha One theme that really stood out to me was how women fight for the rights of their own bodies: Zoya when she was just little to be married off, and all the women Nina helped to free from rape and forced pregnancy. And in a way Nina herself, as she is never ashamed of her body and sexuality. I wonder if anyone else was really impacted by these themes, in a book that is titled for the main male character too?!

Scott Nvenue Superbly written review.

mary Completely agree with all of this! The disjointedness between the two stories is probably the weakest part. I am sure it is intentional but it really throws you off. But I’m so happy you loved it overall. It is so good!

Mia Robinson I agree completely. I found the two stories to be completely separate and even though there was a small link between the two (the whole Nina was sent to help the grisha by Nikolai) it didn’t really matter much. On the whole, completely agree with you.

Georgiana Do you think I could read the Six of Crows duo and this spin-off without reading the Grisha trilogy?
