I really enjoyed this one and didnβt expect to. Itβs not one of Kingβs that I see talked about very much and Iβm quite surprised after reading it that it isnβt talked about more. Very underrated.
At its core The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is a survival story about a little girl whoβs love for a sports hero keeps her alive.
Trisha had such grit, determination and courage. I immediately bonded with her and sheβs now one of my favourite characters King has created.
Iβm a big fan of horror set in the wilderness, particularly wooded settings so this really hit the spot. The landscape really lent to the overall sense of isolation and darkness. I found myself wondering how I would have felt at Trishaβs tender young age of nine. Would I have had the same will to survive? King gives the reader intimate insights into Trishaβs mind as she navigates the challenges of the wilderness, making the story even more powerful.
Thereβs many elements here that you will find in other survival horror stories such as dehydration and starvation but it also felt like a unique read on its own. Considering the book is basically set in the one place with the one character, I think King did very well. I didnβt find myself bored at all. A really enjoyable read.
