Before picking this up, you should know this is more a character-driven, police procedural than a thriller. As the story begins, you know the who, the what, and the why. From there you're just watching the plot move from point A to point B. This was not riveting material.

Ben Packard was a compelling character as a gay sheriff of a small town with gossipy women. But there really wasn't much to work with here. I would be interested to read a second installment with his character, as long as the next one includes more thrills and twists.

Emmitt's POVs were fascinating. Viewing the world through his warped, demented lens was actually interesting - although I could've done without the details of him observing the naked body of the underaged girl he held captive. Too bad we didn't get many of his POV chapters.

This was just meh for me. Nothing to dislike, but nothing to love. If just one twist were added or something was withheld from the reader to offer the smallest amount of suspense, then this could easily be catapulted to a 5-star read.

The audio narrator was spot on, especially for Emmitt's voice. Cheers!

Jayme Excellent points! Sorry it wasn’t the riveting read you had hoped for! 💕

JaymeO Great review! Points well-taken and I agree that a twist would have really made this one a stand out! Glad you are willing to continue reading more from this author!

Kat Great review, Derek. I'm sorry this didn't have anything special to make it *pop*. I hope you love your next read!

Holly B (slower pace!) The premise isn't for me, but I know how a great narrator can elevate the story, so at least there was that! Cheers!

Lit with Leigh This one sounded interesting but a trusted source told me it was ass. Thanks for confirming it's nothing special

A twist really would've elevated this a notch or two. Thanks, Jayme!

Chantel Awesome review, Derek! This doesn't sound like a book I would particularly enjoy based on the points you listed alone...Sorry that it was such a bummer! At least the audio format wasn't a total loss, that would really tip me over the edge lol. Hope your next read it better! :)

There wasn't much to garner here haha so I'm sure it's an easy pass for you! 😊 Thanks, Chantel!

Melissa (Sailing the Greek Isles) Yes, it's really important to know that it's not a thriller. I think that I had read some reviews in advance that gave me warning about that so I adjusted my expectations and was able to enjoy it a bit more. I look forward to seeing more of Packard in the future to maybe develop his character a bit more.

You're right, I probably would've enjoyed this a little bit more if my expectations were adjusted. Definitely looking forward to another Packard novel. Thanks, Melissa!
