** spoiler alert ** Donald Christie, an American Historian, is in possession of 12 thousand documents from the seventeenth century, dating back to the discovery, foundation and colonization of Manhattan by the Dutch. When he travels to the Netherlands an unlikely event results in his drowning in the Amsterdam canals.

When a journalist finds out he had been threatened, she starts to dig into the story, believing that there may foul play. Following the paperwork she discovers a trail that leads to the question whether Manhattan is American soil or still belongs to the Dutch. Donald's death cannot hide the truth that large scale real estate fraud is commited in Manhattan and that murder seems to be the method to keep money in the right pockets.

The truth about the possession of this land and the documents are kept hidden by the journalist when she discovers the truth about what happened in the past. The questions about the ownership are answered but covered up again by the American President and the Dutch prime minister's chief of staff.
