Granted that this book is considered one of Heinlein's Juveniles, it is a rather dark and pessimistic book with a strangely ambiguous ending. The misogyny ("stupid women") is rank and naturally all the protagonists are male that also both dates it and weighs it down. The roly-poly Willis was an interesting idea as was the Martian subway. So, there are some great ideas here, just not all as polished as in some of his later books.
