I've come to think, after reading The Piano Tuner and North Woods, that Daniel Mason is not for me. He is a fine painter of image and landscape but his characters and plots leave me cold. North Woods, a saga of three hundred years in the hills of Western Massachusetts, is told through the inhabitants of a yellow house in the woods; an apple obsessed fruitier and his two grown daughters, a promiscuous psychic, a gay landscape artist and too many unmemorable others. It just bored me ultimately after a promising start. I have many friends who loved this but it just wasn't my cup of tea.
