TOO LATE was a dark psychological thriller that had me reading through my fingers in places, hoping the characters I was rooting for might have a happy outcome. Sloan is in an abusive relationship with drug dealer Asa Jackson, who is crazy and obsessed with her. He holds her captive by financial means and also through being the only way she can pay for the care for her disabled brother. There are many scenes of physical and sexual assault in this book, so heed content warnings. Carter is an undercover DEA agent assigned with another agent to infiltrate and try to take down Asa. While working in the house, he and Sloan fall for each other. This has a romance plotline, like many of Hoover’s books, and I enjoyed the book, but I would call this more a dark psychological thriller about a girl trapped in an abusive relationship rather than a romance because it’s very dark. Still, it’s a very good book. 5/5 stars.
