it was amazing
bookshelves: horror

** spoiler alert ** I hate vampires. I hate them and I hate books about them. I hate the way they're romanticized and sexualized and just generally presented in modern fiction. That's why I loved this book. King doesn't shy away from the fact that vampires are creatures of horror and he presents them as such. They are vile, violent, and everywhere, and that's the way I like them.

The characters pitted against them, particularly the priest, are compelling and almost too human to face the vampires. And, in the end, they don't actually triumph. They escape but that's about it. It's tragic and horrible and the perfect vampire book.

Amanda Amen Sister! I also hate the current fetish in books and movies where vampires are The! Hot! And! Sexy!

Going to the bookstore and trying to find fantasy that doesn't feature the latest crop of hot and sexy vampires and werewolves is frustrating. Even worse, now that this stupid Twilight movie is coming out, I feel like I'm going to have to put my head in the sand for several months until the hysteria is over.

Great review.

Artdalinkwent then why would pick up a ook about them. It sais on the back what it is about.

Benjamin I think we're all tired of the romanticized vampire novels we are being bombarded with. You know what I'm talking about. Vampires should be scary and terrorize the soul out of you. If you want to read a new novel about these type of vampires, check out The Strain by Guillermo del Toro. That's the guy who directed Pan's Labyrinth. Creepy book, great novel.

Andrew I love Steven King ; he is my favorite author. I agree that i absolutely hate the typical vampire stories. This is one of my favorite books of all time. I love King's vivid descriptions. This book will give people insomnia from the late night reading and the nightmares

Steve Well spoken, Mary.

Therifleman57 Mary, I hate the vampires that are so popular today (True Blood, Twlight, etc.). Vampires are horrible creatures of the undead. They make victims of us by drinking our blood & are not romantic, well- built guys with six-pack abs and dreamy eyes.

Noah McClintock I have to agree with everyone here. Twilight sucks (no pun intended.) Salems Lot if the best vampire book I've ever read.

Kristin Love your comment, my thoughts exactly.

Noah McClintock This was like the 3rd book by Stephen King that I read.

Matt Cyprian Reviews are not supposed to give away the ending. it's not merely a spoiler. You didn't just give away a plot twist or ruin a surprise. You ruined the ending.

Another thing. You say you hate vampires and books about vampires, and your reason is that you have an expectation for vampires that is violated by current young adult fiction. This means that you like vampires. You say you like them dark, which is what they are supposed to be, and traditionally have been.

It's paradoxical. It's like you want vampires to be the way they originally were, but it's also like you've never read Stoker. Dracula was "" sexy" only out of expediency, and his whammy-effect was only on his intended victims. He is described as what he is: literally, a leech.
