Johanne used to spend her summers selling strawberries but now that she's slightly older her mother decides she needs to get a real job in addition to her strawberry selling. Through the neighbors Johanne ends up working as a maid for an admiral's family, where she meets the Tullik, a passionate and beautiful girl who is used to doing as she pleases. Tullik takes a liking to Johanne and befriends her, often getting her out of her chores so that they can go to town or the beach.
The town Johanne lives in is beautiful and visited by tourists over the summer frequently. The admirals family is one of the many people summering there, but so are many artist, one of who is renting Johanne's house from her family. Next door to Johanna lives Edvard Munch, a disreputable painter who everyone gossips about. Though her mother forbids her from talking to him Johanne sometimes has conversations with Munch because of her love for painting. He lends her Goethe's Theory of Colours which she reads through to improve her art.
In the course of their friendship Johanne learns that Tullik's older sister had an affair with Edvard Munch. Both girls are fascinated by the tortured artist but Tullik especially so. As the cross paths with Munch, he and Tullik soon strike up an affair. Johanne must cover for Tullik as she gets pulled deeper and deeper into her affair with Munch, jeopardizing her job as she struggles between her perceived friendship and loyalty to Tullik and her job at the house plus what is expected of her.
The story is supposed to be based on the real life affair that drove Munch to paint The Scream and before reading the book I really had zero idea about the backstory to the painting. Coming in with this lack of information I can't say how accurate the story is, even in terms of the art because I'm not well versed with art history. I did however enjoy the story and the writing. I liked the emotional and illustrative writing style and the way it set a hazy tone to the story. I also liked reading about Johanne's changing attitude as she grows up over the summer, it was some what different from the other coming of age stories I've read. I did feel like the affair between Tullik and Munch was a little overly dramatic especially with the painting and then her losing her mind but it fit in with the way the rest of the story was told.

Nu îmi explic de ce nu am citit cartea asta până acum, chiar dacă o aveam de doi ani în bibliotecă. Nu îmi explic nici de ce nu e atât de cunoscută și citită. Merită cu siguranță!
O poveste la prima vedere asemănătoare cu "Fata cu cercel de perlă", dar mult mai bine scrisă, vă rog să mă credeți pe cuvânt, se poate.
Fata cu fragi e diferită. Ea aparține naturii, e sălbatică si vrea să iubească prin artă. Suntem în Norvegia anilor 1890-1950, aproape de Kristiania(azi Oslo), plină de pictori înrădăcinați în clasicism sau expresioniști, ca Edvard Munch. Cartea vrea să-l înțelegem, cu toată durerea lui, iubirile, suferința din spatele picturilor și o posibilă geneză a tabloului "Strigătul".
Deși...sunt multe voci în carte, citiți-le și ascultați-le! 😱

"Fata cu fragi" este un roman pe care îl așez pe același raft cu "Fata cu cercel de perlă ".
Un roman despre viața pictorului Edvard Munch cu al său celebru tablou" Strigătul "care a fost adulat și respins în același timp, dar niciodată trecut cu vederea.
Un roman plin de viață, despre natură și culoare, despre inocență, creativitate și dorință.
Frumos scris. Recomand.

Romanul este o semi-ficțiune care se rotește în jurul lui Edvard Munch, faimosul lui tablou, Strigătul, fiind și el un personaj ascuns în a doua jumătate a cărții. Autoarea ne duce într-un loc idilic și ne poartă prin viața tumultoasă a artistului anxios, care suferă când arta lui nu este înțeleasă, dar, în același timp, simte o nevoie iminentă de a se izola și a-și ascunde opera de mulți, ca un animal sălbatic de care te poți apropia doar după ce a văzut ce căuta în ochii tăi. Descrierile sunt splendide și am simțit pe deplin liniștea de pe insulă, dar nu am putut empatiza cu Tulik, cea care este sfâșiată de iubirea pentru Munch, deși i-am înțeles sentimentele intense. Pur și simplu, mi s-a părut că a fost cam isterică, iar dragostea ei a depășit granița spre obsesie, un tărâm periculos în care se duce iubirea neîmplinită. Însă a fost o încântare să citesc despre Munch și viața lui, chiar dacă unele aspecte nu au fost reale, iar Johanne, cea care ne spune povestea, a fost și cea în care m-am regăsit cel mai mult. Se pierde, se caută și se găsește după ce se călește în focul vieții, realizând că fără toate acele întâmplări care au răvășit-o ar fi fost o alta, una care nu ar fi avut nimic din tot ce îi aduce acum fericire. Dacă sunteți pasionați de pictură, atunci o să vă placă mai mult.

Jag läste klart Målarens Musa sent igår kväll, det var inte min plan, men jag kunde helt enkelt inte sluta läsa boken. Den glödande kärlekshistorian mellan Tullik och Edvard Munch kom att bli så intensiv och så fylld av galenskap att jag inte kunde sluta läsa boken. Som om jag hade smittats av den besatthet som rådde i boken.
Handlingen börja med att Johanne tar anställning hemma hos familjen Ihlen och möter Tullik. Tullikdras till den bohemiska konstnären Edvard Munch, en man vars tavlor är så syndiga att Johanne råds av sin mor att aldrig titta på den. Men Johanne som drömmer om att måla, kan inte låta bli att fängslas av Munch och hans tavlor och utan hennes mors vetskap så låter Munch Johanne måla hemma hos honom.
Men det är Tulliks och Edvards kärlekshistoria som ställer allting på spel för Johanne. Hur långa ska hon kunna skydda sin vän? Och hur kommer allting att sluta. För den djärva Tullik vill ha Edvard till varje pris, men Edvard, ja han må vara fängslad av Tullik, men målandet kommer alltid att vara hans första älskarinna.
Målarens musa är en fängslade bok som börjar förrädiskt lågmält men i och med den förbjuda romansen mellan Tullik och Edvard mer och mer blir besatt blir också handlingen mer och mer intensiv och till slut måste det blir ett utlopp. Frågan är hur kommer allting att sluta?
Boken är oerhört bra skriven. Jag kunde verkligen se tavlorna och miljöerna framöver mig och detta är utan tvekan en bok om man både är intresserad av att lära sig mer om Munch, men även om man älskar att läsa en historiska romaner som griper tag i en. Eller både och!

I finished The Strawberry Girl late last night. That it was not my plan, but I simply could not stop reading the book. The passionate love story between Tullik and Edvard Munch was getting so intense and so filled with madness that I could not stop reading the book. As if I had been infected with the obsession that existed in the book.
The story begins with Johanne taking a job at the family Ihlen and meets Tullik. Tullik is attracted to the bohemian artist Edvard Munch, a man whose paintings are so sinful that Johanne is advised by his mother never to look at it. But, Johanne, who dreams of being a painter herself, is intrigued by Munch and his paintings, and without her mother's knowledge, is Munch letting Johanne paint at his home.
However, it is Tulliks and Edvard's love story that puts everything at risk for Johanne. How long will she be able to protect her friend? And how is everything going to end? For the bold Tullik wants Edvard at all costs, but for Edvard, despite being enthralled by Tullik, will painting always be his first love.
The Strawberry Girl is a captivating book that begins deceptively slow, but as the forbidden romance between Tullik and Edvard gets more and more obsessive and wild does the story become more and more intense and eventually, there must be an outlet in some way. The question is how is everything going to end?
The book is extremely well written. I could see the paintings and the environments before my eyes as I was reading the book and this is undoubtedly a book for you if you are interested in learning more about Munch, or if you love to read a historical novel that will grip you. Or both!

O carte surprinzătoare, care imbina viata si opera pictorului norvegian Edvard Munch cu fictiunea.
Actiunea se petrece in anul 1893, in pitorescul Kristiania, vechea denumire a orasului Oslo, personajul narator fiind Johanne, o tanara servitoare prin ochii careia ne este infatisata povestea de dragoste sfâșietoare dintre o domnisoara din inalta societate, Tulilk si excentricul pictor Edvard Munch, idila care sta la baza tabloului sau de referință, “Strigatul”.

Un “tablou” cu stari si trairi emotionante, contradictorii si scandaloase. Prezinta povestea (imaginata) realizarii faimosului “Strigat” al lui Edvard Munch, controversatul pictor al Norvegiei. Desi, toata lectura m-a dus cu gandul la “Fata cu cercel de perla” a lui Tracy Chevalier, similitudinile fiind prezente la tot pasul, “Fata cu fragi” mi s-a parut mult mai bine conturat si scris si mult mai atractiv.

❝ Adevărul poate părea adesea vulgar, iar minciunile pot sclipi la fel de frumos ca stelele.
Ceea ce face ca romanul Lisei Stromme, să fie diferit de poveștile de dragoste ale altor artiști și muzele lor este faptul că povestea are la bază un întreg tablou cu toate minunile naturii! ❤️
Metaforele fac lectura o încântare și aduc un plus de vibrație fiecărei pagini în parte și ne dezvăluie astfel frumusețea locului în toată gloria sa, și în același timp, ne permite cu pricepere să vedem opera pictorului ieșind din peisaj.
În Fata cu fragi ne este relatată povestea relației amoroase care l-a inspirat pe Edvard Munch să picteze faimosul tablou The Scream. (Strigătul)
Pe mine m-a atras în mod deosebit relația subtilă dintre Johanne și Munch și temperamentul lor artistic comun. În timp ce Johanne descoperă cum să devină artist, Munch învață cât de greu este să trăiești ca unul.
Johanne este vocea cărții, fata cu fragi. Înainte de a deveni menajeră, era liberă să facă ce vrea, era fascinată de pictură, în special de tablourile lui Munch, și obișnuia să cutreiere zilnic pădurea ca să strângă fructe sălbatice pentru a le vinde turiștilor de vară.
Este vara anului 1893, iar satul pescăresc norvegian Asgardstrand este umflat de un aflux de oaspeți buni și artiști boemi din oraș.
Libertatea lui Johanne este îngrădită atunci când mama ei o trimite ca menajera pentru o familie bogată, fam. Ihlen. Atrasă într-o prietenie neliniștită cu fiica lor cea mai tânără, Tullik, ea trece din rolul principal în cel intermediar, fiind astfel puntea de legătura în idila amoroasă care va prinde viață între noua ei prietenă și controversatul pictor.
Autoarea țese în mod expert ficțiune în jurul faptelor reale referitoare la relația lui Munch cu Asgardstrand și familia Ihlen, oferindu-ne în acest fel o poveste frumoasă și captivantă despre cum a prins viață celebrul tablou.

O carte interesanta. Fara sa vrei intri usor in pielea personajelor si traiesti impreuna cu ele. Subiectul incredibil de actual: o dragoste atat de intensa, incat este greu sa separi normalul, de nebunie. Cine poate sti ce inseamna binele sau raul din viata noastra... Cand citim o carte buna, fiecare ramana cu altceva in minte. Pe mine ma obsedeaza cat de diferit este modul de gandire al barbatilor, fata de cel al nostru, femeile. Doar incercand sa ii intelegem ajungem sa ne gasim linistea in iubire. Dar oare reusim mereu? Este totusi atat de greu! Ratiune versus visare.

“Fata cu fragi” a fost cartea pe care îmi doream de foarte mult timp să o citesc. Titlul, subiectul și coperta mă atrăgeau de fiecare dată și aveam impresia că voi găsi în acele pagini una dintre cele mai bune cărți citite.
Lisa Stromme nu mi-a adus asta, însă m-a lăsat cu o poveste frumoasă și cu un subiect care am considerat că merită cercetat în amănunt. Atunci când am închis cartea am intrat imediat pe internet pentru a afla mai multe informații despre Edvard Munch, pictorul care a realizat celebrul tablou “Țipătul”.

Am fost mereu atras de cărțile care îți dezvăluie orizonturi noi, adică informații, lucruri inedite despre personalități, oleacă de cultură generală, chiar dacă într-o formă ficționalizată.
Fata cu fragi este o astfel de carte, care pornește de la câteva lucruri reale de la finalul secolului 19: Edvard Munch, poetul național al Norvegiei crează tablouri în fiecare vară într-un satuc dintr-un fiord, Asgardstrand. Acolo se îndrăgostește, pe rând, de două surori, lucru care le va transforma viața acestora. Fata cu fragi este un tablou al lui Heyerdahl, și el un pictor renumit al epocii, prieten cu Munch și este imaginată de Lisa Stromme pentru a fi narator.
Un roman despre dragostea mistuitoare, despre puterea și singurătatea artistului, despre nevoia sa de a se detașa de tot și toate, despre culori și natură. Frumos.

I read until 30% of the book before deciding it wasn't for me. The narrative is to slow and even though things happened I felt like it was always the same. So, the Strawberry Girl, known as such because she licks strawberries on the forest and on Munch's house (he who can never be mentioned) is sent by her mother (in hopes to make her less of a rascal) to work as a servant and somehow befriends one of the Almiral's daughter. All in 30% of the book. I just couldn't find my way into this book.

a sensual and evocative novel which perfectly portrays the juxtaposition of the rigid etiquette of the wealthy and the bohemian lifestyle of some of the artists of the time.
A story of passion and nature which, for me, has brought to life the work of Edvard Munch as well as adding Norway to my bucket list.

Se dorește a fi o carte plină de culori vii, însă mie mi s-a părut extrem de ștearsă și de prost scrisă...pe alocuri penibilă. Ideea de la care pleacă autoarea e bună, însă stilul de scriere și modul în care a fost construită acțiunea, m-au plictisit, și indignat uneori, îngrozitor.

I actually really loved this book and the fact that I was already familiar with Munch's paintings made the experience even better.

Si parla di pittura in questo romanzo dal titolo evocativo. Si parla d Edvard Munch, famoso pittore de "L'urlo". Anche se devo dire che alcune parti troppo "mistiche" oppure troppo "drammatiche", in particolare le reazioni eccessivamente "malate" di Tullik, coprotagonista non narrante, ciò nonostante è un libro più che discreto. Lo stile è scorrevole, ma non banale. Le descrizioni sono accurate e anche sentite: si vede che, come scritto nella postfazione, l'autrice ama questo luogo.
Narra tutto al lettore Johanne, ragazza povera che raccoglie e vende fragole al mercato, dipinta nel quadro da un pittore suo ospite che va in vacanza affittando la sua casa in estate; il quadro è reale e l'autrice eicama su questo tutta la storia.
Johanne sogna di diventare una pittrice, conosce Munch e i suoi frequentatori e ne è attratta senza però farsene travolgere, al contrario della sua padroncina che ne uscirà segnata per sempre.
Mi è piaciuto trovare nell'epilogo la postfazione, come dicevo, in cui l'autrice spiega come ha preso ispirazione per l'opera; cita quello che è accertato storicamente, quello che non lo è e ciò che lo è in parte; fa l'elenco delle opere di Edvard Munch, che è poi il vero protagonista del romanzo, coi suoi dipinti e la sua "follia"; e mette poi anche un breve elenco delle fonti usate.
Quindi, nonostante sia un romanzo un po' visionario e a volte eccessivamente "romantico" con le sue manifestazioni di sensibilità estreme, probabilmente anche dovute all'argomento, se vogliamo parlare di pazzia e di arte, beh, questo testo è stato scritto dopo un buon lavoro di ricerca. Lo scoprirete poi leggendo la postfazione a opera conclusa.
Consiglio proprio a fine libro di andarsi a guardare i quadri citati nell'elenco delle opere. Tra cui quello che dà il titolo al libro.

Vara lui 1893 in oraselul norvegian Avgarstrand, un loc pictat de Dumnezeu in cele mai frumoase tonuri, scaldat in cea mai frumoasa lumina si insotit de salbatica mare. Aici,in fiecare vara, casele satenilor sunt inchiriate de pictori dependenti de frumusetea acestui loc. Printre ei, Edvard Munch, actualmente una din cele mai emblematice personalitati culturale ale Norvegiei, ale carui picturi se vand cu zeci de milioane de euro, dar care atunci era doar ,,nebunul".
Tablourile sale expresioniste, violente prin forta culorilor si a liniilor, erau considerate obscene,diavolesti si toata lumea incerca sa se tina departe de Munch.
Personajul narator, Johanne, o fata simpla dar cu o pasiune pentru pictura, devine slujitoare pentru familia bogata a amiralului Ihlen,dar totodata devine si confidenta si prietena uneia din fetele Ihlen, Tullik. Johanne si Tullik sunt atrase magnetic si inevitabil de tablourile lui Munch si isi vor petrece vara penduland intre sperante si realitate, ascunzandu-se de parinti si incercand sa traiasca prin sentimente. Si aceasta vara le va ramane marcata pentru totdeauna in spirit,mai ales prin halucinantul tablou ,, Strigatul".
Mi s-a parut deosebit de frumos modul in care Lisa Stromme s-a inspirat din realitate pentru a da viata acestui roman, simplistic din punct de vedere al actiunii, dar cu o scriitura impecabila.
,,Ma plimb in liniste prin visele care sunt viata mea- doar asa pot trai. "
,,cand patrundem in valea mortii,trebuie sa o strabatem singuri. Daca nu avem o lumina in noi,ratacim singuri pe intuneric."

Amazing book, I totally recommend it! I had such high expectations of this book and I was a bit afraid it would not live up to them, but it surpassed them instead!
It's a book about breaking social barriers and norms, about being different in a strict society and at what cost comes not to think at every step "What is the world going to think about this?!".
It's a book about madness, love and grief, and about translating feelings intro colours, into images, and preserving them that way.
A great historical fiction for everyone who loves art, especially painting; for everyone who feels deeply and lives everything with intensity; for everyone.

It was a wonderful read! I loved the fact that, every time I searched Munch's work to see if the description in the book matched a real-life painting, I was not disappointed. It makes you feel part of the story :)

O carte interesantă. Iubitorilor de arte (pictura) le va plăcea foarte mult si nu din cauza ca unul din personajele aflate în prim plan este pictor, ci pentru că sunt o grămadă de detalii ce tin de artă și frumos.

3,5 stelline
Quest’estate, dopo essere stata in Svezia e in Norvegia, ho comprato una serie di libri ambientati in questi paesi. E dato anche il mio amore per Munch, non potevo che non comprare anche questo.
Questa lettura mi ha piacevolmente stupito, anche se, allo stesso tempo, ho trovato alcuni dettagli che mi hanno fatto storcere il naso.
Ho adorato tutto quello che aveva a che fare con Munch e con il suo modo di vedere l’arte, la capacità dell’autrice di creare un personaggio profondo e veritiero, la cui personalità non si discosta per niente da quello che fuoriesce dai suoi quadri.
Ho adorato ancor di più l’idea di descrivere le sensazioni provate con i colori, colori forti e cupi per descrivere una storia d’amore oscura e tormentata, il tutto facendo sì che al lettore sembri più di avere di fronte un quadro piuttosto che un dipinto.
Ma tutto questo riguarda solo la prima metà del libro o poco più. Ad un certo punto, infatti, tutto questo si perde e la storia si fa più blanda, meno emozionante, in alcuni punti fai fatica a leggerla, non ti viene proprio voglia, perché vorresti tornare a provare le stesse sensazioni di prima, mentre quello che stai leggendo sembra quasi un altro libro.

I've gone through a couple of chapters but I'll have to stop here. The writing feels insipid and there's nothing in the plot or the characters that intrigues me, not even a little bit. Very small chance I might end up enjoying it.

Wow... it has been forever since I've written a book review. Partly because I don't read as much anymore and partly because I get nervous reviewing books. What if I missed something in the book? Anyway, it's supposedly good for the author. So, here I am. Also, I'm pretty sure that you have to get the book via Book Depository and so I will just say that the physical book is stunning and has end papers that match The Scream.
Summary: Similar to Loving Vincent , this book is an ode to art. The title is taken from Hans Heyerdahl's work but it focuses on what happens to the strawberry girl when she begins working for the Ihlens. There she meets Tullik, a young romantic who ventures out into meeting Edvard Munch. From what I understand, and I am fairly new to Munch's art, the scenes are more or less from pieces of his art. It's semi based on a potentially true story which is hard to explain without spoiling the book.
I really really really enjoyed this book. There was not a time I wasn't engrossed. I loved all the openings quotes from Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe's Theory of Color. I'm someone who's captivated by extreme emotions and angst and therefore I found the relationship between Edvard Munch and Tullik fascinating. Yes, there was not much plot in this book but that did not bother me in the least. I also commend this book because even as someone who took AP Euro, nobody ever gets to learn about Scandinavian countries. I think the most I ever did was briefly learning about Gustavus Adolphus during his bit in the Thirty Years War. And so with this book, I was able to learn about history but also I learned about the works of Munch. I have to say it's entrancing, I see why The Madonna and The Sick Child have become staples of art history... and of course The Scream but I mean who doesn't know that one. I have become much more interested in creation due to the triumph of creation presented in this novel. A book that entertains, educates, and inspires sure sounds like a good book to me.
