What if everyone who is white turned brown suddenly, overnight? The novel reads almost like a parable, the storytelling drawn out, connected by stream-of-conscious thoughts of peril and privilege, of love and loss, of what we hope for ourselves and the people we love, how we see ourselves and each other. TOM LAKE started so slowly for me, so achingly slowly that I wasn’t sure it was going to work for me. But then a friend started crying while reading it and I had to keep going. I’m so glad I did. What Ann Patchett does is she gets to the heart of the matter so elegantly. I love her writing, her way of storytelling. What a lovely novel.
