1. CONTEMPORARY DOG CRATE

2. DIY CONTEMPORARY DOGHOUSE BY ADORABLE HOME
This DIY Contemporary Doghouse comes with a full step-by-step tutorial in case you want to make one for your pup. Wouldn’t this look cool painted gold? With it’s flat top it could easily be used as an unique end table as well.
3. END TABLE DOG CRATE
I couldn’t find the original source for the picture below, but I love the concept and think you could easily create this with an old end table. I would probably use plaid oilcloth on the inside of the table for easy clean-up.

This appears to be a custom piece of furniture but I think it could easily be replicated. I would use a cabinet and simply customize the cabinet doors to accommodate a furry friend.
9. FAUX CORNER CABINET DOG CRATE BY SIMPLY JANELLE DESIGNS
Here is another clever DIY dog crate. A faux corner mantel multitasks as a doggie bedroom. The easiest way to accomplish this cute look is to find a corner cabinet and dismantle it. Attach to studs in a corner of your home. These corner cabinets can be often be found at thrift stores.

I have five big-ish dogs and although we dont use crates ever, some of these ideas would be great for us to use to give our cats their own extra spaces where the dogs couldnt fit! I love the end table beds, my biggest Cat, (Onion, rescue aged 24) doesnt climb so would like one of those to make her own. I’ve got a cellar full of furniture that is waiting for inspiration to grab me so I’m definitely going down there later to find something suitable! Although she may be a bit disgruntled if I throw out the tatty old cardboard box bed her daddy “made” her….
Jen says
Put the box in the end table crate … baby steps to ween her from it. Break it down little by little as she she becomes more comfortable in her new space.
Jez says
Great ideas but I’d never put a crate in the kitchen, especially in an island. Crates are the dustiest, hairiest places a dog goes – you’re just inviting all that stuff into your food.
jsmith says
Oh please… dog hair and dust are part of owning a dog.

INDEED!

Agreed, there’s plenty other spots to put it without building your kitchen island around it. Odd choice, works for them I guess, unless they need to sell, I’d like to see the realtor get creative pitching that as a plus lol

White bedside table upholstered in plaid is Brian Patrick Flynn’s work. Incredible designer.

I liked most of the ideas in this article, esp. the cute yellow Ollie dresser…cute! But the one about the laundry room right next to the washer does appall me a bit. Washing machines and dryers are noisy, and a dog can hear that even 20 times louder! Please dont put your dogs in the laundry room! I remember my last dog always avoided going near the laundry area when the dryer was on. Also you need to consider the health risk that you expose your dog(s) to from the chemicals in the laundry room all day (detergent, dryer sheets, washing tabs etc). I guess all Im trying to say is perhaps there is a better healthier little spot in your house that you can give to your little loyal friend who gives you unconditional love every day of his life?

Agreed.

I love these! We recently converted an L shaped kitchen cabinet into a dog kennel. Only cost $30 for the grate and for the handyman to cut the hole!

I love all of the ideas and pins and think they’re sooo very beautiful and far more creative than anything I would ever imagine…Now, how about some ideas for crates that house tall, giant breeds like Great Danes or English Mastiffs comfortably, and yet still fit into the home environment fashionably????
Beth says
That is a tall order! (Pun intended. 🙂 )

Hi Deborah!
I lived in a small condo with an 80 pound dog so a built in dog crate was a must! I turned an under the stairs mini closet into a doggie room that was perfect for my tall lab! I ran across a cute garden gate at an antique store which sparked the inspiration. Best yet, all it took was removing and storing the door and rigging hinges for the gate. I could have easily replaced the door to the closet when I sold the unit, but the buyer LOVED the doggie space and asked to keep the gate. < Proof that we're not alone in our dog loving craziness 🙂

My ex was so obsessed with what future buyers would want that he never let me so much as hang a picture, much less plant a garden. We lived like that for ten years until I left (for infinite reasons). The entire time, every inch of carpet was covered with cheap, ugly braided rugs or plastic to “save” the carpet, I couldn’t ever fry anything, plant flowers, hang curtains, paint a wall anything other than white. And all Hell would break loose on the rare occasion I accidentally spilled anything. I have always decorated apartments however I wanted and when I moved I put it back the way I’d found it – or better – and never did I fail to get my entire deposit back. If and when you decide to sell YOUR house you can drywall over the opening and no one ever the wiser, or it could be viewed as a plus, extra storage, duh! This is your HOME! It is incomprehensible to me that anyone would base any aspect of their life on what a random stranger might possibly want in one possible future that might never happen. I’ve been in cheap motels where I felt more comfortable. While you’re living there, it is YOUR HOME. I hope you can convince him of that someday.

Not every home buyer would want a built-in- dog crate but I wouldn’t let it stop me from putting one in either. In my first two homes we made every decision based on resale and in my third I finally put that aside. This is MY house first and foremost. It would be very easy to sheet rock over a built-in-crate and repair the moulding so it was never there. Besides that I can easily picture a built in dog crate in a top of the line show home complete with faux dog. We have our original home plans and we found 5 dead spaces (not to mention the space for a chair under the kitchen desk we never use) where we could put a built-in dog crate. One of the spots is particularly unobtrusive and could be turned into a small storage spot with a door instead of a grate. Thank you so much for all the wonderful ideas.
Beth says
You’re very welcome Kathy and I look forward to seeing your built-in dog crate! My husband is unfortunately still not on board with my plans to tear into the drywall and moulding, so I’m modifying my plans. I recently redecorated our living room and we are in need of a new entertainment unit. I hope to modify a buffet to hold the dogs on each side. They are tiny dogs, so I think it will work beautifully.

For what it is worth… Years ago I found 3 old console TV cabinets at a thrift store….
Took out the innards and set my kennels inside them! They looked awesome! Unfortunately, when Hurricane Charley visited Florida, my home was destroyed….ALL OF MY PETS MADE IT!
So, those who are working on a ‘lean’ budget…keep your eyes open..treasures are waiting to be repurposed!
Beth says
So sorry to hear about your home but how wonderful that your pets all made it! Great tip on the old console.

Thank you for some creative ideas Beth. My favorite is the bookshelves one.

I recognized that octagonal end table, I have 2 of them on either side of my sofa, They are outdated, so thanks for giving a new vision for repurposing them. I am tired of having my dogs crate in the middle of the floor.

Some of these are so creative! This isn’t something I’ve ever thought about before, but something I would like to do with our crate in our next home (which I hope is more spacious!)

We’ve got a new puppy here so these are very inspiring to me!! I am so going to find a spot to build in a dog crate!! I pinned several for future brainstorming.
Beth says
Congrats on the new pup! I want to do a built-in one as well. I’m thinking of placing it in a spot that leads to our basement staircase. Let me know if you build one!
Bliss says
I popped over and pinned a few of these, so yeah I’m feeling inspired. Inspired to pin at least!
Beth says
Inspired to pin is always welcome around here! 🙂

We put our dog crates in the laundry room UNDER the washer and dryer. Best decision ever. It saves us so much space.

Beth says
That sounds like a great idea! Did you simply build a platform to place your washer and dryer up on so that the crates fit below?
Jackie says
Yes, we built it just high enough to slide the crates easily in and out (a must for cleaning because we have long haired dogs). I had a few doubts about putting the puppies under those heavy machines, but my husband designed the platform to be quite sturdy and we tested it extensively. The dogs actually seem to enjoy being under the dryer while it is running..

I did the cabinet-converted-to-dog crate. It was at the top of my stairs in my rear entry. Convenient to the door they always use & close to my bedroom. Once they were all crate trained (two pugs & a cocker spaniel … two are rescues), I posted the cabinet on craigslist for a best offer sale. I was expecting about $50, but the only investment I had in it was my time. The local animal shelter called me and asked if I’d donate for an benefit auction. I did. Much to my surprise it sold for $300. It made me happy that the shelter reaped the rewards.
Beth says
That is awesome Bonnie! What a blessing for the shelter :).
