Lane Kiffin fired after Arizona State demolishes USC

Three wins, two losses, and a fired head coach. So it goes for the USC Trojans and Lane Kiffin who was relieved of his head coaching duties after the Trojans' charter plane landed in Los Angeles early Sunday morning, according to multiple national reports.

Kiffin's USC squad played a rather disinterested second half of football against Arizona State on Saturday night as the Trojans allowed 42 points including 28 in a row in the third quarter to take a 62-41 loss in Tempe. The 62 points allowed matched the most points a USC team has ever given up, which is a mark set last year under Kiffin when the Oregon Ducks scored 62 at the Coliseum.

The Sun Devils racked up 612 yards of total offense against a defense that came into Saturday night's matchup widely considered one of the top five defenses in college football. The Trojans surrendered 267 rushing yards after allowing an average of 59.3 yards per game on the ground through their first four games.

Kiffin's demise began a year ago when he led the Trojans to a 7-6 record and an appearance in the Sun Bowl in El Paso. The Trojans lost to a Georgia Tech squad in the game and also failed to show up on time for a bowl banquet honoring the two teams playing in the game.

This season, the Trojans' started out with an underwhelming victory against Hawaii before dropping a 10-7 decision at the hands of the Washington State Cougars at the Coliseum. After the game, Kiffin described a brutal home crowd that showered boos down throughout the game by saying "We (USC) are getting pretty used to playing on the road."

USC defeated Boston College 35-7, but barely squeaked by Utah State in a 17-14 victory last weekend. Most coaches with records of 3-1 have pretty significant job security, but after Arizona State's dismantling of the Trojans, USC athletic director Pat Haden decided to fire Kiffin.

ESPN reported early Sunday morning that USC recruiting coordinator and assistant coach Ed Orgeron will take over as interim head coach in wake of Kiffin's firing.

4-star linebacker recruit Derik Calhoun has already announced his de-commitment from USC and other recruits may follow suit in the coming days.

Multiple sources reported that Kiffin was pulled off of the team bus after the Trojans' plane arrived at the airport last night and not allowed to ride back to campus with the team.

Kiffin's overall record during his tenure with the Trojans dropped to 28-15 after last night's loss and his Pac-12 conference mark fell to 17-12.
