Baltimore lawyer (1779–1843) who was inspired to write the “Star-Spangled Banner” after he witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British in 1814. Rare early bank check, 6.25 x 2.25, filled out and signed by Key, “F. S. Key,” payable to Walter and Clement Smith for $479.73, February 17, 1802. In fine condition, with two vertical folds, two small areas of paper loss to left edge, and a few light wrinkles. Key’s signature is bold and crisp and checks from Key are quite rare.
