Memorial Day
|
Memorial Day is a 2011 war drama that focuses on the experiences of two US soldiers serving in two different wars. On Memorial Day, 1993, 13-year old Kyle Vogel (Jackson Bond) discovers the footlocker of his grandfather Bud (James Cromwell), a World War II veteran who served in the 82nd Airborne Division, and the young Kyle convinces the reluctant Bud to open up about his war experiences. A decade later, Kyle is a Staff Sergeant in the 34th Infantry Division serving in Iraq. Wounded by an IED, he starts reflecting on the stories of his grandfather and his own combat experiences. In the flashbacks to World War II, Bud is portrayed by John Cromwell, the real life son of James Cromwell.
The following weapons were used in the film Memorial Day:
Handguns
Walther P38
A Walther P38 plays a significant part in the film. The pistol is first glimpsed when shown as one of the souvenirs found in Bud Vogel's footlocker in 1993. When his grandson Kyle (Jackson Bond) calls the pistol a "Luger", Bud accurately corrects him by identifying the pistol as a Walther P38.
Springfield Armory M1911A1
Lieutenant Bud Vogel (John Cromwell) carries what appears to be a Springfield Armory M1911A1 during his World War II service. A Springfield Armory version of the M1911A1 is a modernized version of the original M1911A1.
Beretta 92FS
An Iraqi insurgent carries a Beretta 92FS.
Submachine Guns
M1A1 Thompson
An M1A1 Thompson is used by Lieutenant Bud Vogel (John Cromwell) while serving in the 82nd Airborne during World War II.
MP40
Several German soldiers carry the MP40.
Rifles
M4A1 Carbine
SSG. Kyle Vogel (Johnathan Bennett) and most of his squad carry the M4A1 carbines during their tour of duty in Iraq, fitted with Aimpoint CompM4 red dot sights, AN/PEQ-2 and AN/PEQ-15 IR designators and RIS foregrip. Some of the soldiers have M203A2 grenade launchers underneath their M4A1s. Since the Iraq scenes are set during 2005, many of these accessories (e.g., the Aimpoint CompM4 and the AN/PEQ-15) are anachronistic for the time period (the CompM4 was first issued as a replacement for the CompM2 in 2007, while the AN/PEQ-15 was not widely issued to regular infantry units until 2009).
M1 Garand
The M1 Garand is the main weapon of Lieutenant Vogel's platoon during World War II, most notably Gorski (Reed Sigmund) and Frankie Califano (Aaron Courteau).
M1 Carbine
Several paratroopers carry a full-length M1 Carbine with an anachronistic bayonet lug.
M1A1 Carbine
Several soldiers in Lieutenant Vogel's platoon carry the M1A1 Carbine, once again fitted with a bayonet lug.
AKM
Iraqi soldiers and insurgents are armed with AKM rifles.
AMD-65
Iraqi insurgents carry Hungarian AMD-65 rifles.
Norinco Type 56
An Iraqi soldier carries a Norinco Type 56.
Karabiner 98k
German soldiers are armed with the Karabiner 98k.
FG 42
A German soldier can be seen firing an FG 42 during the Battle of the Bulge.
Sturmgewehr 44
Several German soldiers carry the Sturmgewehr 44.
Machine Guns
Browning Automatic Rifle M1918A2
Strangely a paratrooper uses a Browning Automatic Rifle M1918A2 with the bipod removed during the Battle of the Bulge. In reality the 82nd Airborne never was equipped with the BAR as it was too big and could not be broken down.
M249E2 SAW
PFC Nick Sullivan (Thomas Sellwood) carries an M249E2 SAW with a custom picatinny rail during his tour in Iraq.
M240B
An M240B is seen mounted on a US Army Humvee.
Browning M1919A4
An 82nd Airborne Machine Gun crew use a Browning M1919A4 mounted on an M2 tripod to fend off a German attack during the Battle of the Bulge.
Browning M2HB
A Browning M2HB is seen mounted on a US Army Humvee in Iraq. A quad-mounted M51 can also be seen on a US Army Halftrack in the Bulge.
MG 34
A German soldier can be seen with an MG 34 during the Battle of the Bulge.
MG42
The MG42 is used by German foot soldiers, and mounted on the Kubelwagen jeep and SdKfz 251 Halftrack.
Launchers
M203 Grenade Launcher
Several US soldiers in Iraq have the M203A2 grenade launchers attached to their M4A1 carbines.
M136 AT4
An M136 AT4 can be seen in an ISF recruiting base.
Panzerfaust
A Hitler Youth soldier (Jasper Morgan) can be briefly seen with a Panzerfaust.
RPG-7
An Iraqi insurgent can be seen with an RPG-7.
Grenades
Mk 2 Hand Grenade
Gorski (Reed Sigmund) uses a Mk 2 Hand Grenade to take out a German machine gun crew.
Gammon Grenade
An 82nd Division paratrooper uses a Gammon Grenade to take out a German antitank gun crew. Someone must have been playing Medal of Honor: Airborne while writing this movie.
Model 24 Stielhandgranate
A German soldier uses a Model 24 Stielhandgranate during the Battle of the Bulge. Bud Vogel refers to it as a "Potato Masher" when recounting the story to his grandson.
