World in Conflict
|
World in Conflict is a real-time tactics (RTT) video game released on September 18, 2007 in North America, later on September 20 in Australia and on September 21 in Europe. Developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft (formally by Sierra Entertainment) for the PC, World in Conflict won many Best Strategy Game awards for 2007. Set in an alternate late 1980s, the game depicts a desperate Soviet Union pursuing military action against NATO in a last-ditch attempt to preserve itself, triggering World War III, culminating in an invasion of the United States by Soviet forces in 1989. The single-player campaign has players control US and NATO forces across war-torn Europe and the Northwestern United States.
In March 2009, an expansion pack called World in Conflict: Soviet Assault was released and introducing six new single-player missions, which shows the war from the Soviet perspective, and introduces new characters.
The following weapons appear in the video game World in Conflict and the expansion World in Conflict: Soviet Assault:
WARNING! Spoilers are included in few pictures and their descriptions.
Handguns
Beretta M9
A Beretta M9 is fired by an American soldier during the final cutscene of the mission Last Stand. This could also be the holstered sidearms of some characters.
Colt M1911A1
A pistol with a wooden grip that's likely a Colt M1911A1 appears in Bannon's holster.
Makarov PM/Baikal IJ-70
A Makarov PM is used by Capt. Malashenko in a couple of cutscenes. It may perhaps be modelled on the commercial version, as it appears to have an adjustable rear sight.
Unknown Revolver
An unknown, low-detail revolver is used by Seattle police officers in the beginning of the game.
Shotguns
Franchi SPAS-12
A stock-less Franchi SPAS-12 can be seen in the intro and in one of the CGI trailers, though not used in-game. It can also be very briefly seen (though poorly modelled and far too small) during an in-engine cutscene.
Assault Rifles
AK-47
The AK-47 is the standard-issue weapon of the Soviet soldiers. It is inaccurate to see the AK-47 used by Soviet soldiers in 1989, the AK-74 would be more appropriate. As with the other assault rifles, the AK-47 is always seen with an attached grenade launcher; a GP-25 in this case.
AK-74
The more period appropriate AK-74 is seen in the hands of Soviet soldiers during Soviet Assault cutscenes.
AS Val
AS Vals are seen in the hands of the unique "stealth" Spetznaz during the first Soviet Assault mission.
Colt M16A2
The M16A2 is the standard issue weapon of the US soldiers and Norwegian Rangers. In cutscenes, the M16A2 is seen used by 1st Lt. Parker, Cpt. Mark Bannon, Cpl. Anton "Ants" Rodriguez, Cpt. James Webb (with an M203 grenade launcher), and many other characters. In gameplay, the M16A2 is always depicted with a M203 grenade launcher.
Colt Model 733
A Colt Model 733 is used only by Col. Sawyer in France and Norway, though he never fires it.
FAMAS F1
In cutscenes, Commandant Jean-Baptiste Sabatier is the only NATO character to be seen carrying a FAMAS F1.
FAMAS G1
The FAMAS G1 is the standard issue weapon of the NATO soldiers. Like the M16A2 and the AK-47, the FAMAS G1 in always seen with a grenade launcher in gameplay. The FAMAS G1 was never mass-produced; the NATO troops (who are primarily French) should be using the FAMAS F1 seen above.
Sniper Rifles
FR F2
The FR F2 is seen in the hands of French NATO snipers.
M24 SWS
An M24 Sniper Weapon System with camo paint is used by US snipers.
SVD
The SVD is the Soviet sniper's weapon.
Machine Guns
M60
The M60 can only be seen used by US soldiers in both the intro and New York cinematic videos.
M249 SAW
The original M249 is used by Cpl. Thompson in cutscenes. Cpl. Thompson is the only one to be seen using an M249, though in gameplay the US Infantry squads incorrectly use the Mk 46 Mod 0 instead.

M240B
The M240B, distinguished by the rail on top, but missing its heat-shield, is mounted on Land Rovers and also used by one soldier in each Infantry squad. It is odd to see the M240B in use by NATO forces, as an FN MAG would be more appropriate.

Mk 46 Mod 0
The Mk 46 Mod 0 is used by one soldier in each Infantry squad. It would be more appropriate to see an M249 SAW or M60, as the Mk 46 Mod 0 is designed as a special operations weapon, and is also anachronistic to the late-1980s setting. A note of interest is that the front sights are awkwardly modelled and don't look like any from an FN Minimi-based weapon.
PKM
The PKM is used by Soviet Infantry squads and mounted on UAZs.
Launchers
BGM-71 TOW
The BGM-71 TOW appears inside anti-tank fortifications for all factions.
Carl Gustav M2
The Carl Gustav M2 is used by US soldiers as AT defense.
FIM-92A Stinger
The FIM-92A Stinger is used by only one soldier in each Infantry squad, and is able to attack helicopter units. As with the US Infantry, NATO forces also use the FIM-92A Stinger against air units.
GP-25
The GP-25 grenade launcher is used by Soviet soldiers and is attached to all AK-47s in the game.
M136 AT4
In the Soviet Assault launch trailer, some American soldiers can be seen firing an M136 AT4. It is also seen on the back of a soldier in one of the US campaign's cutscenes, though is never seen used in-game.
Mk 153 SMAW
What appears to be an Mk 153 SMAW made by altering the pre-existing BGM-71 TOW model is used as the NATO anti-tank launcher. A more appropriate launcher for French forces in the 1980s would be the LRAC F1.
RPG-7
The RPG-7 is the standard Soviet AT weapon in-game. Its rear part is awkwardly modelled, appearing unusually long.
SA-7 Grail
The standard Soviet AA weapon appears to be the SA-7 Grail.
Grenades & Explosives
M15 anti-tank mine
A number of M15 anti-tank mines are seen in a seized US arms cache during a cutscene.
Mounted Weapons
Alenia Difensa TM-197B
The gun carried by the Agusta A129 Mangusta is the Alenia Difensa TM-197B, an Italian license-built version of the General Dynamics M197 Vulcan.
Browning M2HB
The Browning M2HB is mounted on M1025 HMMWVs, AAVP-7A1s, and M1A1 Abrams tanks. It is also mounted on machine gun fortifications, even Soviet ones.
GAU-8/A Avenger
The General Electric GAU-8/A Avenger can be seen mounted on USAF A-10 Thunderbolt IIs.
GE M134 Minigun
The GE M134 Minigun can only be seen in the "New York" cinematic video, mounted on the tail of a USMC MH-53 Pave Low helicopter (while the Pave Low was only used by the US Air Force, once can assume that during World War III, equipment standardization may be understandably relaxed). The Minigun is in the original crew served mount and is fitted with a GAU-17/A type slotted flash suppressor.
General Dynamics M197 Vulcan
The General Dynamics M197 Vulcan is mounted on AH-1W Super Cobras.
GIAT M621
The gun carried by the Aérospatiale Gazelle SA 341F is a GIAT M621 20mm cannon.
KPVT
The KPVT heavy machine gun is mounted on BTR-80 APCs.
L21A1 RARDEN
The primary weapon of FV510 Warrior IFVs is the 30mm L21A1 RARDEN.
M61 Vulcan
The M61 Vulcan is the anti-air weapon used in the American and NATO fortifications (the M167 VADS) and the M163 VADS, as well as USAF's F-15s and F-16s.
M85 Heavy Machine Gun
The M85 heavy machine gun appears in the game as the secondary armament of M60A3 Patton tanks.
M230 Chain Gun
The M230 Chain Gun is mounted on AH-64A Apaches.
M252 Mortar
Light artillery APC units use M252 Mortars as their main weapon.
MG3A1
Crudely rendered MG3A1s can be seen mounted on the commander's hatch of Leopard II tanks.
NSVT
The NSVT is mounted on the commander's hatch of Soviet T-80U MBTs.
Oerlikon KDA 35mm
A pair of Oerlikon KDA 35mm autocannons are the primary armament of the Flakpanzer Gepard.
Rheinmetall MK 20 Rh 202
The primary weapon of the Spähpanzer Luchs is the Rheinmetall MK 20 Rh 202. This vehicle is depicted in-game as an amphibious IFV, whereas it is in fact a reconnaissance vehicle.
Shipunov 2A42 autocannon
A 30mm Shipunov 2A42 autocannon is mounted on the Soviet BMP-2 (together with a 9M113 Konkurs ATGM), and Mil Mi-28 Havoc gunships (which were not produced until 1998, 9 years after the game is set, or fly for another 5).
Yakushev-Borzov Yak-B
The 12.7 mm Yakushev-Borzov Yak-B four-barrel machine gun is seen mounted on Mil Mi-24V Hind-E gunships.
ZU-23
The ZU-23 is the anti-aircraft armament of Soviet fortifications. The weapon is also seen quad-mounted on ZSU-23-4 Shilka anti-aircraft vehicles.
