About Jesse
Jesse Greenwood was born and raised in the Eastern Sierra, discovering his artistic passion amongst wide open lands of sage, pine and granite. As he pursued his interest in art making during his formative years, he felt the pull toward higher education in the arts. He graduated with a B.F.A.. from Los Angeles’ Biola University in 2012, having concentrated in painting and illustration and studied art history both locally in California and abroad in London. Jesse is 100% deaf and communicates entirely by use of cochlear implants.
“As I’ve refined my painting interest in more recent years, I’ve found myself particularly interested in representing the sweeping expanses of the American Southwest. I travel extensively to create plein air studies on location, from the arid heat of the Mojave and Sonoran deserts to the misty coastlines of California. I maintain a practice of creating these small studies and developing them studies into large, finished studio works in my studio in Tucson, AZ.
As I’ve honed my practice and simultaneously become increasingly deaf, I find myself increasingly drawn to portraying the “feeling”, or sense of place, of specific locations through accurate yet intuitive use of color. I firmly believe that the loss of one of my senses (hearing) has inversely increased by ability to see, capturing the authenticity of such a sense of place in paint. The thoughts and emotions go down upon canvas through the language of color relationship, and this essential verity is what gives me my voice as an artist in these modern times.”
