I would tell them to hire a chauffeur with his own car and a good driving record. It’s cheaper at the end plus they don’t have to worry about the awful traffic there since the driver would be an expert at it and also responsible for his or hers own vehicle and insurance. Actually I’m thinking it would be a good business to start there.

There are a number of spectacular spots that are just perfect as day trips from Panama City. Some of these spots include Cajones de Chame, which is 90 km (56 miles) away from the city, and Laguna de San Carlos, which is 110 km (68 miles) away.
  • If you’re flying in, you’ll probably want to pick up your rental car from the airport so you can start your vacation right away. If your flight is arriving at Tocumen International Airport, then you will find the rental car offices in the airport’s Arrivals Hall.
  • It is worth remembering that cell phone use is strictly forbidden when driving in Panama. This is important to remember because many tourists use their phones to navigate Panama City. So stay on the safe side of the law by having a passenger be the guide during your time in Panama City.
  • Rush hour doesn’t last overly long in Panama City, but nonetheless it is definitely worth avoiding. Booked a Thrifty reservation for 6:00 pm pick up at the PAC airport in Panama City, Panama. HOWEVER all of the airport car rentals in that location close at 5:00 pm. NO where on any of my reservation information did it say that they would be closed. HOW can Kayak/ Thrifty even make and guarantee a reservation time when the location is closed. I also spoke to a representative twice to confirm the car size two days before my arrival. I had to take an Uber to the Thrifty location In Panama City and there- the customer service representatives were extremely helpful. I eventually did get a car (it was vacation week so the options were limited) Also the customer service agents at the office said that they were not surprised, that this happens often.

The car we reserved was not available when we arrived. The only vehicle that could accommodate our passengers and luggage was a truck. The agent charged us the full price for the truck which was considerably more expensive. He said that there was fine print on the webpage explaining that this may happen and we were responsible for the difference in price. Also, the agent didn’t show up for work on the day we returned the car so it took over an hour to find someone who could help us.

They had a policy that indicated that they would run my credit score and I was ask to sign it. I scratch the line out as well as another line indicating that I promise to return the tank full. If the guy at the desk indicate something else then have it in the policy, it is confusing. Also the representative at the desk didn't do a good job of explaining to me what will be charge to my card. I discovered that it was almost $500 when he first indicated $285. I don't think I would ever go with Thrifty or any associates of theirs again.

The vehicle that I had reserved and paid for which was more expensive was not available when I arrived. Then I was given a much smaller vehicle and told to exchange the vehicle for the right one at a different location. I went to the other location and they also didn’t have any wasting my entire day waiting and waiting. This was the must awful, unprofessional and unorganized experience I ever had with any rental company ever. They had no empathy, nor compensated me for literally my entire day wasted while I was on vacation. Panama Thrifty by NO Means operates in the same standards as other countries.

The pickup/drop off could not have been any closer to the business, it was great.

Cons:

Upfront pricing would have been appreciated. The price you get quoted is GREAT...come to find out it is not the case at all. It is actually 3/4 times more expensive (normal price for US rental). The quote is only for the car BUT you have to get insurance, from Panama (no third party insurance companies outside of country are accepted). So, what started off as a $81 total price for 5 days turned into a $240 price tag AND I had to cancel the third party insurance I purchased (still waiting for my reimbursement).

I was astonished with how much the insurance that they require you to have is. It was just about more than the actual rental. This is something that should be told to us when we rent. Knowing beforehand would be very very helpful

The reservation was supposed to be a pick up from airport but the car was not there. I had to take taxi to the city and pick it up from another location. Staff at airport was rude. The vehicle had a broken trunk latch, I had to crawl through the back seats to open it from inside everytime, which was a pain in the a** with all the luggage.

Company is not clear about charges and even didn't want to give a printed receipt after we returned the car. Alleging within 30 min you would get by email. We had to insist because we were leaving the city without knowing final charge. When he finally printed the receipt there was 40 dollar difference from what he told us verbally.

Alamo as some others on their groups are nothing but thieves. They scam me from a luxury car to a cheap one claiming that AMEX didn’t cover insurance for the luxury car while holding in their hands a letter from them stating that I was covered. But still charged me the luxury car rate blaming on Kayak taking their share off the top first. In other words they pretty much said not to use Kayak at all. I wouldn’t recommend Alamo or any of their affiliates to a dog. I’m not the first one they’ve done this to.

I had an offer for $150 for the car and then when I got there they said it was not available anymore and I ended up paying over $300 for a worse car. Never renting from them again.

All ok apart from pricing. Booked one way ride and I was charged extra 200$ just for this. No indication during booking that the price can be so high. I've rented many times with different companies around the globe and always booking price was the one you pay. Minor adjustments such as insurance ok but not 5x more. Knowing this before booking would make me book Avis which had better drop-off location.

They really push you to get all insurance through them. Even tho we had insurance with our credit card, their deposit went from $1,000.00 to $100.00 if we insured with the car rental company and they said we would not get our deposit back for 2-3 weeks.

Professional Staff. Car was ready on arrival. Easy pick up and drop off. Clean vehicle.

Cons:

Mechanical issues with vehicle. For some bizarre reason the outside of the windshield remained fogged up on humid and rainy days. Always had to have the windshield wipers on. Electrical issues with the infotainment center and fuel gage. After fill up gage would show about 85% full, after driving through about a quarter tank of gas the gauge would show full. 25% markup on tolls using the E-pass. Wanted to charge me Collision Insurance, but I declined because I was covered by my credit card, so they applied a different insurance that costs the same.

I still have heard nothing in March nor seen a refund($1087.86) Beware of Kayak and Priceline! what a way to start a vacation and incure additional cost of money in renting another vehicle at a premium and additional hotel stay while trying to sort this out! This rental was a complete scam! There was no Economy kiosk at the Panama (PTY) airport, the hotel where the cars were supposed to be was closed and there was no economy presence there. Nobody knew anything, and people who did speak to us and took us to a couple of different car rental places at the airport wanted an arm and leg to rent a car. So we used Uber and taxes all week.
