Rent an AWD or 4WD. We stayed on main roads. But on our drive over to Lake Arenal, there were detours due to slippage. The detour required an AWD/4WD drive vehicle with clearance to get thru. Otherwise, driving was not bad, just be ready for heavy traffic.

Be sure to rent something that you can use 4 wheel drive when needed , we were there for five weeks and did an extensive amount of driving and never put the vehicle in 4 wheel drive … just for peace of mind.

It is best to rent an SUV or 4x4 for getting around the area. Do your research on car rental in Costa Rica as the fees differ from most countries.
julius andreiDec 2023
Very useful for those who are willing to drive around and explore. If you’re planning to just stay at a hotel or all-Inclusive resort, and occasionally do excursions outside your lodging then it may not be worth renting a vehicle. Transportation to and from the hotels/ resorts are expensive but still cheaper than having to rent a vehicle.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Liberia
While there are shuttle and bus services that bring visitors into the city from the airport or other locations, public transportation within Liberia is limited, making taxis one of the most viable modes of transport. By securing a Liberia car rental, travelers can have the autonomy and flexibility to travel throughout the city without being restricted by ride availability and without having to waste time waiting for a ride to arrive. What’s more, independent vehicles will put off-the-beaten-path locations within reach and will allow travelers to determine arrival and departure times for outings. Coupled with the affordability of rental vehicles in Liberia, the option is also cost-effective.
The Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport, otherwise referred to as the Liberia Costa Rica Airport (LIR), hosts several car rental kiosks for rental companies, including Enterprise, Budget, Avis, National, Sixt, and Europcar, among others. There are representatives for the companies at the airport, so whether you have a reservation or not, you can usually grab a car rental in Liberia from here. As you’re exiting the terminal, you’ll find rental desks to the far left of the building, with vehicles in the adjacent parking lot.
The road systems throughout Costa Rica were updated to include stoplights at several intersections where previously there had only been stop signs, however, in many of these updated locations, the original stop signs were not removed, so the intersection includes both forms of traffic instruction. If you come across such an intersection while driving your car rental in Liberia, you will want to take heed of the traffic light—if the light indicates green, proceed through the intersection without stopping.
The months of January through early May tend to be peak tourist season in Liberia since these are the driest months of the year. Travelers can expect roadways to be more congested during these periods, especially given the fact that limited public transportation options encourage visitors to rent personal vehicles. Drivers in rental cars should stay alert on these more crowded roadways, particularly when it comes to buses and 18-wheelers, as they often do not yield to passenger cars—it is recommended to let these types of vehicles pass. Also stay alert for motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
Renting a car in Liberia, Costa Rica, will help you prioritize flexibility and adventure. The Ponderosa Adventure Park, for instance, is one of the best places to visit in Liberia. Although the park is a couple of miles from the city’s center, you can get there in about 10 minutes to the park with affordable Liberia car rentals. A car rental gives you the freedom to tour as many destinations in Liberia as you want. If you wish to tour La Leona Waterfall or the historic cultural museum, Museo de Guanacaste, cheap car rentals in Liberia will help you travel to various destinations without relying entirely on shuttle buses and other modes of public transportation.
Many Liberia car rentals operate in LIR (Liberia Costa Rica Airport). Some of this airport’s reputable car rental agencies include Avis, SIXT, Europcar, and Budget. Therefore, you won’t have to rely on limited public transportation to get to your favorite car rental agency to book your car. At LIR, you will find several rental desks with rental vehicles in the parking lot as you exit the terminal on the far left side of the airport’s main building. You will find cheap car rentals in Liberia that meet your travel needs at the airport.
Liberia has unpredictable terrain, and you need to choose the right rental car to navigate the city and its environs. If you are exploring the far-flung, mountainous areas of the area, the best rental car should be a compact vehicle such as 4WD. The city has also sandy coastal areas and you can explore the pristine beaches with an SUV. While traveling with your family, the right choice of a rental car should be a full-size SUV because it can comfortably accommodate five passengers and two bags.

Payless has great customer service for the situation we were out in. The insurance prices are crazy but at the end of the day it wasn’t Payless fault. Borderline scam, and I place about 60% blame on Expedia/carrentals.com/kayak. When I came to pick up the car, the price suddenly doubled due to the “mandatory” liability insurance that was not at all disclosed in any of the previous communications from CarRentals.com or Avis. Moreover, I had to reach out to the (superb) Amex support team to get a letter of coverage (at night in a foreign country) to avoid having to buy optional CDW insurance from Avis as well. Again, this was in no way disclosed at any time between the booking and the pickup. A terrible way to start a great vacation! I recommend looking up an independent car rental company and skipping both Avis and these middlemen.
The first car we got didn't run properly and the 4wd didn't seem to work. The replacement car also didn't run very well and it got a flat tire. The third car we got was great - no problems. The staff were alsways willing to help and were very friendly. the insurance costs were outrageous.

Cost was supposed to be $224.97 for a week, plus I paid about $88 for Allianz insurance when I booked stateside. On arrival at the rental place in Costa Rica I was told the Allianz insurance only covers collision, and I also need liability insurance. Not sure if this is true or a scam, but ended up paying $495 for the week (rental plus cheapest liability insurance option). The car had 74,000 miles. Low pressure light came on on the last day, so i had to have the gas station pump up the tires, though fortunately did not go flat.

Customer’s must understand third party insurance to include your credit card (exception AA Centurion) are not sufficient. You will need to pay for their mandatory liability insurance coverage or accept the risk and have a $1k deposit held on your card. If you do get in an accident and cause harm you will sign you are still responsible for the funds and the $1k deposit held will be charged.

Hertz price does not reflect true price. Upon arrival they state Costa Rica law you must get insurance from them only. So if one pays from the site they have to pay again. Should be told before booking if that’s the law. And reflect the price correctly. False advertising and price alteration not great for consumers.

Everything was fine except for letting me know at the counter I had to buy liability insurance in Costa Rica that is the law. I have car insurance through my credit card but was told unless provided a letter stating it covers liability and gave them a $5,000 deposit, I had to buy their insurance. The insurance ended up costing more than the car charges. This is something that should be explained prior to making a reservation.

Hidden fees and required insurance resulted in a 3x increase to quoted rate from website. Instead of $246.93, total cost was $735.13. Kayak is a joke. This is the ultimate rip-off as there was no way to accurately compare REAL cost of the rental. Further, the front end of this car was in terrible shape. At the first bump encountered, the left front end slammed loudly - which was an indicator of a car that was unsafe to drive. Very disappointed is an understatement.

The car was OK (Toyota RAV4), but had over 110k kilometers and was 6 years old. The annoying part is that they keep giving half-empty tanks on pick-up. That way they never have to refuel their cars, as people always return more gas than what they pick up (practically impossible to return the same amount). In case you return less, you get charged for gas. I rented a few times from them, as well as our friends once, and the same thing happened every single time. One time the tank was 1/8 full, so we practically had to drive directly to a gas station. The company regularly has the lowest rates, but their fleet has by far the oldest cars, compared to other rental companies around the airport.
When we went to pickup the car the person at the front desk was asking us to pay double the price saying it’s for insurance. We waisted couple hours there and left without a car and needed to find alternative transportation. Also the place looked very shady and o my few cars there. Didn’t seem like legitimate place
