The military is often considered to be at the cutting edge of technological developments so that it remains tactically advantageous at any given time. Therefore, it does not come as a surprise that the armed forces are one of the early adopters of technologies like flexible printed circuit boards (PCB) or miniaturized devices. The military uses PCBs for a wide range of applications, including communication equipment, computers, vehicles, firearms, and more. Today, PCB has become a critical factor in determining the functionality and appearance of ergonomic device components, mainly due to the increasing demand for robust multi-functional systems in the defense industry. However, in the third era of the Military-Industrial Complex (MIC), the demand and supply of military-grade PCBs are far from reaching equilibrium within a favorable price bracket. The primary reason behind this is the consolidation of many previous defense contractors into singular entities that resulted in fewer suppliers of MIL-certified PCBs. As a result, the situation has left the defense sector searching for a reliable technology partner that is flexible and able to adapt to the nuances of being a defense supplier. In this regard, the company that tops the list for most defense manufacturers is the American Standard Circuits (ASC)—helping the defense force execute their R&D projects pertaining to advanced PCB.

“We are the most flexible and capable independent PCB fabricators in the U.S.,” says Anaya Vardya, CEO of ASC. An end-to-end PCB solutions provider, ASC manufactures quality rigid, metal-backed, RF/ microwave, flex, and rigid-flex PCBs for the medical, automotive, industrial, defense, and aerospace markets.

We make sure we have access to every requisite resource—be it cutting-edge technology or competent workforce— needed to handle quality defense projects

Moreover, ASC is both MIL- and AS9100D-certified on a wide variety of its products. In the past three years, ASC has invested significantly in modern equipment along with software and necessary certifications to meet and surpass the needs of armed forces. “We make sure we have access to every requisite resource—be it cutting-edge technology or competent workforce— needed to handle quality defense projects,” highlights Vardya.

ASC helps its clients in the early development phases so that they can customize PCBs to meet their specific needs. Further, ASC works with designers on alternate stack ups including via structures, laminate materials, surface finish options, and ideas relative to thermal management. This is important for managing the increasing structural complexity and subsequently offering amplified interaction between processes and systems for a reliable product. The company has also attained several process patents, which is a testament to the continuous innovations at ASC. To this extent, ASC have incorporated the usage of Laser Direct Imaging (LDI) in its technology portfolio. With the help of LDI, ASC can develop miniaturized PCBs with utmost perfection.

Having already established itself as one of the most reliable military-grade PCB suppliers, ASC plans to continue providing a ‘Green and Clean’ PCB fabrication to meet the highest standard of environmental conditions. Working toward this goal and increasing its ongoing support for the defense industry, ASC is now on the lookout for vital technical people to grow its team. Vardya highlights that ASC aims to continue staying flexible, reliable, and consistent in its offerings for defense customers, and reiterates the company’s motto, “to stay ahead of the competition in offering the best value in PCB production.”

ASC Sunstone Signs Licensing Agreement With Precision Circuit Technologies

West Chicago: Anaya Vardya, the president of American Standard Circuits

Sunstone, has announced that his company has entered into a licensing agreement with Precision Circuit Technologies (PCT), an operating unit of LCP Medical Technologies LLC. ASC Sunstone is now an authorized manufacturing partner for PCT’s advanced Laminated Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) technology.

This collaboration empowers ASC Sunstone to offer customers PCBs with the following features:

• Up to 30 layers of LCP with sequential laminations
... r> • Sub 25-micron lines and spaces

• Additive processing with 1-micron control of circuit geometries for 1-2% impedance control

• Low loss performance beyond 120 GHz wireless and 112 Gbps-224 Gbps-448 Gbps high-speed digital

• Solid copper full metal stacked vias through all layers

• High-speed flex, rigid-flex, rigid boards, RF MW modules, and advanced semiconductor package substrates

This partnership positions ASC Sunstone as a leader in LCP production technology, filling a void in the industry by offering a reliable manufacturing process. ASC and PCT will collaboratively support customers with dedicated applications and engineering assistance, delivering sophisticated and complex high-performance circuits to meet the demands of next-generation system speeds and circuit density requirements. The material set performance, design-rule-based engineering, and precision control of circuit geometries provide unparalleled capabilities compared to ABF, Polyimide, and other laminate constructions. ASC is set to become the standard for these capabilities in the United States.

This agreement strengthens ASC’s standing as a supplier of Ultra High-Density products in the RF/Microwave, Flex, Medical, and Digital markets using advanced materials, creating synergy with LCP Medical’s mutual customer relationships.

As a leading manufacturer of technology interconnect solutions, ASC Sunstone can now present a new set of solutions to its customers based on the distinctive properties of LCP materials, serving the current focused markets and opening doors to new opportunities.

In announcing the collaboration, Mr. Vardya expressed his admiration for Jim Rathburn’s technology and contributions to the industry, emphasizing the pleasure of finally working together. He sees this as a significant step in becoming the leading independent PCB fabricator in today's market. The combination of LCP technology and Ultra HDI capabilities positions ACS as the go-to company for enterprises seeking futuristic solutions.

James Rathburn, founder and president of LCP Medical Technologies LLC, added, “We believe that American Standard Circuits is the perfect partner for Precision Circuit Technologies PCB Liquid Crystal Polymer technology. They possess the experience, equipment, and, most importantly, the desire to not only produce but also take this future technology to the market. We anticipate great advancements not only for our companies but also for the industry as a whole through this ongoing partnership.”
