Norway ranks high in digitalization in schools, with over 90% of students in grades 1–10 having their own digital device supplied by their school districts and reporting the highest use of digital tools globally in the latest PISA report. However, research shows that implementation processes and competence measures for teachers’ professional use of digital devices vary considerably between schools. This study aims to inform the development of research-practice partnership (RPP) measures focused on professional digital competence development in digitalizing schools internationally by exploring what teachers consider important for good teaching practices in 1:1 computing classrooms. We draw on both closed and open survey responses from 1505 Norwegian teachers in highly digitalized schools where the most experienced teachers have had 1:1 computing since 2014. The findings show that classroom management is seen as gradually more important with higher digital teaching competence and more experience, but that the teachers’ understandings of what digital competence entails and their use of classroom management strategies are rather limited. The study concludes that professional competence development measures that provide broader understandings of digital competence and classroom management are needed, dependent on competence levels and experience, as well as systematic training of students’ digital self-regulation. In Rwanda, following the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, many people were found guilty of genocide crimes and imprisoned. Their children ended up in a situation of ambiguous loss during and after a parent’s imprisonment. The article presents the multidimensional impact of this loss on the everyday lives of these children and their families according to key themes as they emerged from an ethnographic study in which 21 children and their family members participated. Themes include changed family dynamics and family stress, economic deprivation, incomprehension of a parent’s criminal past, the social stigma of being a child of a génocidaire, and strategies used to make the loss bearable. The uniqueness of the ambiguous loss as experienced by children of perpetrators of genocide in Rwanda compared to those of perpetrators of the Holocaust or other mass crimes relates to an amalgam of factors specific for the context of post-genocide Rwanda; major ones being the severity of genocidal crimes and gacaca courts Rwanda chose as its main form of transitional justice. The case study illustrates how using the prism of intergenerational relations helps to understand some of the transformative and enduring effects of a crisis that deeply affects a society. The field of digital forensics relies on expertise from multiple domains, including computer science, criminology, and law. It also relies on different toolsets and an analyst’s expertise to parse enormous amounts of user-generated data to find clues that help crack a case. This process of investigative analysis is often done manually. Artificial Intelligence (AI) can provide practical solutions to efficiently mine enormous amounts of data to find useful patterns that can be leveraged to investigate crimes. Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a subdomain of research under AI that deals with problems involving unstructured data, specifically language. The domain of NLP includes several tools to parse text, including topic modeling, pairwise correlation, word vector cosine distance measurement, and sentiment analysis. In this research, we propose a digital forensic investigative technique that uses an ensemble of NLP tools to identify a person of interest list based on a corpus of text. Our proposed method serves as a type of human feature reduction, where a total pool of suspects is filtered down to a short list of candidates who possess a higher correlation with the crime being investigated. Serious crime modelling typically needs to be undertaken securely behind a firewall where police knowledge and capabilities remain undisclosed. Data informing an ongoing incident are often sparse; a large proportion of relevant data only come to light after the incident culminates or after police intervene—by which point it is too late to make use of the data to aid real-time decision-making for the incident in question. Much of the data that are available to the police to support real-time decision-making are highly confidential and cannot be shared with academics, and are therefore missing to them. In this paper, we describe the development of a formal protocol where a graphical model is used as a framework for securely translating a base model designed by an academic team to a fully embellished model for use by a police team. We then show, for the first time, how libraries of these models can be built and used for real-time decision support to circumvent the challenges of data missingness seen in such a secure environment through the ability to match ongoing plots to existing models within the library.The parallel development described by this protocol ensures that any sensitive information collected by police and missing to academics remains secured behind a firewall. The protocol nevertheless guides police so that they are able to combine the typically incomplete data streams that are open source with their more sensitive information in a formal and justifiable way. We illustrate the application of this protocol by describing how a new entry—a suspected vehicle attack—can be embedded into such a police library of criminal plots. Full article

The existing research on security risk often focuses on specific types of crime, overlooking an integrated assessment of security risk by leveraging existing police resources. Thus, we draw on crime geography theories, integrating public security business data, socioeconomic data, and spatial analysis techniques, to identify integrated risk points and areas by examining the distribution of police resources and related factors and their influence on security risk. The findings indicate that security risk areas encompass high-incidence areas of public security issues, locations with concentrations of dangerous individuals and key facilities, and regions with a limited police presence, characterized by dense populations, diverse urban functions, high crime probabilities, and inadequate supervision. While both police resources and security risk are concentrated in urban areas, the latter exhibits a more scattered distribution on the urban periphery, suggesting opportunities to optimize resource allocation by extending police coverage to risk hotspots lacking patrol stations. Notably, Level 1 security risk areas often coincide with areas lacking a police presence, underscoring the need for strategic resource allocation. By comprehensively assessing the impact of police resources and public security data on spatial risk distribution, this study provides valuable insights for public security management and police operations. True crime podcasts invite their listeners to crowdsource investigations online, solving cases that have fallen through the cracks of the criminal justice system. Through a cultural criminologist lens, this digital ethnography examines The Vanished podcast as a case study of how true crime listeners engage with solving cases in digital community spaces. Previous studies have dismissed true crime fans as pseudo police acting as digital vigilantes. Podcasting communities provide an important public service, working as participatory journalists to investigate the story and report the truth. Rather than depending on law enforcement permission to organize, online crime-investigation communities leverage the Internet’s function as an organizing agent for mobilization beyond the parameters of conventional social structures and formal government agencies. Findings reveal a six-step process of case collaboration between podcast producers, active listeners, and family and friends of missing persons. Other communities can apply this unique system to successfully investigate crime, suggesting implications for individuals within marginalized groups less likely to find justice through the formal legal system. The urban built environment and sociodemographic characteristics have complex relationships with urban crime. However, previous studies have had limitations such as generalizing urban green space types, urban functionality, and sociodemographic characteristics. Given these, this study aimed to explore the relationship between them using more detailed indicators. The study utilized Google Street View and points of interest to depict the built environment. Building on previous work that segmented natural and artificial elements in streetscape images, this study further distinguished trees, bush, and grass. Additionally, it incorporated data from the Data Analysis and Visualization Unit of the DC Office of Planning to reflect a broader range of individual characteristics. Weighted least squares regression and Pearson correlation analysis were used to test the relationship between the built environment, sociodemographic, and crime, respectively. Some of the key findings are as follows. (1) Trees, bushes, and grass all reduce crime. (2) Urban functionality is hard to curb crime by enhancing informal public surveillance. (3) Among the sociodemographic variables, the walking commute rate is the variable most strongly positively correlated with crime. (4) Family relationships play an important role in suppressing crime. This study examined a more comprehensive range of indicators affecting urban crime in favor of safer cities. Full article

Developments in science and technology lead to an increasing use of scientific evidence in litigation. Interdisciplinary research can improve current procedures and introduce new ones for the disclosure and examination of evidence. The dactyloscopic trace is used for personal identification by matching minutiae (the minimum required may vary by country) or for extracting DNA material from the trace under investigation. The research presented in this article aims to propose the merging of two currently used personal identification methods, DNA analysis and dactyloscopic trace analysis, which are currently treated as separate forensic traces found at a crime scene. Namely, the forensic trace to be analyzed is the dactyloscopic trace containing DNA, and both sources of information needed for identification are examined as one. Promega’s Diamond™ Nucleic Acid Dye, presented as a safe alternative to ethidium bromide, works by binding to single- and double-stranded DNA and is used to visualize the separation of material in a gel and to detect DNA in forensic samples. Spectroscopic studies as absorption and emission spectra and fluorescence microscopy observations presented in our research confirm that Diamond™ Nucleic Acid Dye can also be used to visualize fingerprints on non-absorbent surfaces and that combining the two methods into one can significantly increase the evidential value and contribute to the design of an innovative fast-acting optical biosensor. Rates of victimization from identity theft continue to rise exponentially. Personally identifiable information (PII) has become vitally valuable data bad actors use to commit fraud against individuals. Focusing primarily on the United States and Canada, the objective of this paper is to raise awareness for those involved in criminal justice (CJ) to more fully understand potential life-changing consequences for those whose PII is used fraudulently. We examine the impact of crimes involving PII and the urgent need to increase investigations and legal proceedings for identity theft-related crimes. Referring to a National Crime Victimization Survey, we analyze why many victims of identity theft crimes resist notifying appropriate authorities. We also address why those within the CJ system are often reluctant to initiate actions against occurrences of identity theft. We provide insight into consequences experienced by identity theft victims, particularly if their PII is posted on the Dark Web, a threat that can exist into perpetuity. If rates of victimization from identity theft-based crimes are to decline, reporting of victimization must increase, and current legislation related to investigating and processing identity theft crimes must progress. Numerous studies have linked lower levels of serum cholesterol with heightened aggression, violent crimes, and violent deaths across diverse populations, including forensic psychiatric patients, criminals, and the broad public. Interestingly, this association appears to be more pronounced in men than in women. Conversely, findings regarding serum triglycerides present a more nuanced picture, with some studies indicating heightened aggression with elevated levels and others suggesting the opposite. However, most studies have neglected to examine this phenomenon in conjunction with psychological traits. Additionally, no prior research has explored the association between serum lipid levels and different types of aggression, e.g., reactive, instrumental, or appetitive. Considering these gaps, our study aimed to assess serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels upon clinic admission and correlate them with scores from the Appetitive and Facilitative Aggression Scale (AFAS), a self-rating questionnaire assessing reactive and appetitive aggression. We conducted our investigation on a cohort of 135 forensic psychiatric patients undergoing drug addiction treatment under Section 64 of the German Criminal Code. This provision offers a nearly unique opportunity worldwide for individuals who have committed crimes under the influence of drugs or in the context of their addiction to receive specialized treatment. Using non-linear Spearman correlation analyses, we observed an inverse relationship between serum concentrations of both cholesterol and triglycerides and AFAS appetitive violence scores but not for reactive aggression. Additionally, triglyceride levels exhibited an inverse association with the prevalence of violent crimes as an index crime. In conclusion, blood lipids may affect numerous areas of health and disease beyond what is currently known, offering a potential shift in how we understand their role in aggression. Full article

Offenders convicted of trafficking human beings for sexual exploitation involve a high percentage of women compared to other similar offenses. Previous studies have searched for explanations for the dynamics of the illegal sex market and the coercion experienced by victims during the process of exploitation and exit. This article analyses the content of 58 judicial decisions involving a sample of 148 women convicted in Spain of trafficking in human beings between 2017 and 2024. Two main dimensions are explored: the criminal organizations performing the sexual exploitation phase in Spain and the characteristics, positions, and roles of women traffickers within the criminal organizations. Half of the sample occupies leadership roles, while the other half consists of supporters, especially in larger trafficking networks. Regarding the positions and roles of women offenders, supporters and partners in crime are at higher risk of being coerced due to the nature of their roles or partnerships. Full article

Defense wounds generally occur when a victim attempts to protect vital organs and blood vessels during an assault, and are therefore typically located on the forearms or hands. Gunshot-induced defense wounds are less frequent compared to stab wounds, which have been extensively described in the literature. We present three cases where victims unsuccessfully attempted to defend themselves from gunshots, and where the detailed description of injuries played a key role in the reconstruction of the crime scenes. In the first case, a man was shot with a smooth-bore shotgun, presenting a “through-and-through” gunshot wound on the lateral surface of the left forearm and a large gaping wound on the posterior surface of the same forearm. The second and third cases involved two men who were shot with handguns. The first displayed an entrance wound on the dorsal surface of the right hand, with burned edges and smoke soiling, and an exit wound on the palmar surface. The second case involved two wounds on the left hand: one on the dorsum and the other on the palm. To the best of our knowledge, few studies in the literature emphasize the role of gunshot defense wounds in aiding the reconstruction of crime dynamics. The cases presented in this study highlight the importance of precisely defining the pathological and morphological features of the wounds, as well as the bullet trajectories, to accurately identify defense wounds. These findings are valuable for reconstructing the dynamics of the assault and providing critical information to the public prosecutor. Full article

This review paper addresses the growing and increasingly sophisticated issue of cyber sexual crimes targeting children and adolescents. It explores specific examples of various sexual offenses, analyzes the limitations of current legal frameworks, and offers practical recommendations for prevention. As one of the world’s most advanced digital societies, South Korea has witnessed a significant rise in such crimes. These incidents are classified into clear criminal acts, tactics used to lure minors, and occurrences within virtual environments, all of which should be integral to educational programs for children and parents. This study also examines the UK’s Online Safety Act, recognized as a leading model in combating online sexual offenses, and highlights the deficiencies in South Korean law. Given that these crimes often extend into the offline world, exploit vulnerable groups with increasing subtlety, and are challenging for individuals to counteract alone, there is a critical need for specialized education for minors, metaverse training for parents, and the enhancement of both legal measures and international cooperation in this area. Colored textiles are valuable physical evidence often found at crime scenes. Analysis of the chemical structure of textiles could be used to establish a connection between fabric found at a crime scene and suspect cloths. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectroscopy coupled HPLC are traditionally used for the identification of dyes in fabric. However, these techniques are invasive and destructive. A growing body of evidence indicates that near-infrared excitation (λ = 830 nm) Raman spectroscopy (NIeRS) could be used to probe the chemical signature of such colorants. At the same time, it remains unclear whether environmental factors, such as solar light could lower the accuracy of NIeRS-based identification of dyes in textiles. In this study, we exposed cotton fabric colored with six different dyes to light and investigated the extent to which colorants fade during seven weeks using NIeRS. We found a decrease in the intensities of all vibrational bands in the acquired spectra as the time of the exposition of fabric to light increased. Nevertheless, utilization of partial least-squared discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) enabled identification of the colorants at all eight weeks. These results indicate that the effect of light exposure should be strongly considered by forensic experts upon the NIeRS-based analysis of colored fabric. Full article

This study examines some of the documentation tools and techniques that forensic accountants, internal auditors, external auditors, and others can use to document accounting and financial reporting systems under investigation. This study examines some of the documentation tools and techniques that forensic accountants, internal auditors, external auditors, and others can use to document accounting and financial reporting systems under investigation. While prior research has addressed these items piecemeal, this study is the first to incorporate them, along with current related research and theoretical foundation, and relate them in aggregate to the work of forensic accountants, internal auditors, external auditors, and others. Inputs, processes, and outputs of modern accounting and financial reporting systems are often difficult to fully grasp, with weaknesses obscured by the complexities of the system. These weaknesses make a system vulnerable to fraudsters, embezzlers, hackers, and others who will take advantage of system weaknesses to perpetrate financial fraud, embezzlement, or other financial crimes. Documentation tools and techniques examined in this study will be useful to forensic accountants, internal auditors, external auditors, and others for identifying the components, processes, and potential weaknesses of accounting and financial reporting systems.
