Are you serious with the no savings?
Even if your job may be secured, it's a cause for concern.
Have you drawn a budget to identify your cost drivers and see how to work around them?
I do hope you have investment vehicles before your family expanded.
I am serious there is no savings for the past 2 years now. All those budget thing doesn't work anymore it use to work 2 years ago. Although last year i spent over N2.5M to renew my licence due to high dollar rate. Now my rent of 2 bedroom which i normally pay N600K was just increased to N1.5M, Landlords are angry right now. although i am planning to move out in search of a cheaper one with no luck yet. So how do i now start drawing a budget. Of recent i keep drawing budget that never works. Let just face the reality on ground now N1M of today is same value of N100K 2 years ago.

Lagos rent isn't for the faint-hearted. Are you limiting the search to same area you live? I agree with the currency devaluation and inflation.
I'm short of words honestly and it's not easy for people to reduce their standards to save costs.
Beyond HMO, what of emergency funds even if it isn't termed savings for rainy days sir?
I hope wifey saves from the allowance you give her sad

The invisible pen

Joe Armani was never one to settle. At 29, he was already the kind of man who walked like the world owed him something—but deep down, he knew he’d have to earn it first. He spent his days shuffling papers in a sterile corporate office, his dreams growing louder with every tick of the clock.

He wanted freedom—the kind that let you wake up without an alarm and work from anywhere, yet still earned you respect and admiration. The kind that didn’t just pay bills but built legacies.

One evening, while scrolling through social media, Joe paused on a post about a bestselling book. It was hailed as “raw and inspiring,” but a single comment caught his attention: *“The ghostwriter deserves all the credit.”*

Ghostwriting. The word hit him like a jolt.

By morning, Joe was researching everything he could about the craft. He’d always been a storyteller at heart, but the idea of writing for others—becoming the voice behind their success—sparked something fierce inside him. He devoured books on copywriting, personal branding, and persuasion, treating each lesson like a blueprint for his escape.

But ambition without action is a prison. Joe knew that, so he took risks. He offered free samples to entrepreneurs, wrote LinkedIn posts that bled passion, and sent dozens of cold emails to CEOs. He didn’t just pitch—he painted visions of what their stories could become with his words.

Months passed, and his inbox transformed. Small business owners became clients. Then came the executives, the influencers, the dreamers who wanted their ideas immortalized. Joe wasn’t just writing—he was building empires in secret.

One night, he ghostwrote a memoir for a motivational speaker. The book hit the bestseller list. Joe celebrated alone, sipping whiskey and staring at the screen as praise poured in—for someone else’s name. But he didn’t mind. He’d made it.

Joe had become the invisible force behind the words that moved people. His ambition wasn’t about being seen—it was about leaving fingerprints on stories that would outlive him.

And as he closed his laptop, he smiled. Because he knew this was just the beginning.

N400k annual rent in Lagos?

It is well.

Yes, you don't have to live on the island. You will still get a miniflat in that range on the mainland. It might be far but it's better

Provided it's sth of value that appreciates overtime (not sth line car or assets that depreciates), then, you're still on track!

So, in your own Lagos you'll see a house of 400k PA?

and the living condition of that kinda place will be okay? or commutable to the kinda place that pays 650K?

The way some of you talk, I wonder if you've ever stepped on Lagos soil..

Depends on you sha. You can decide to take accomodations in Ikoyi or lekki where you pay #1.5m PA because you earn #650k if you like. It's your choice!

But unfortunately, your type only realizes that you've been living in fool's paradise when after about 7-10years, you find it difficult to account for all the money you have made over the years.

You just confirmed my assumption..

You are so far away, and don't know the situation of things or house rentals in this city right now. Imagine mentioning Ikoyi and 1.5m together?

I put it to you, and still asking you. Where's he going to see 1 or 2-bed for 400K in Lagos (Even on the Mainland, not even talking of island).

Let's know and I'll come running tomorrow morning cos myself and three other colleagues have been searching tirelessly as well.. Is it Ikorodu that you want to say? Lol

Maybe take a look at rentals price in Lagos right now, check properties site, agents status, and all and come back. There's been a debate on this on X recently, and house searchers begging the government to help look into this.

You wouldn't know until you start searching.

and just so you know. This is coming from someone that has to go all the way to IB to rent a normal flat, and I then commute to Lagos for the days I need to be at office cos I work hybrid.

I am certainly going to move out and look for a relatively cheaper rent if my landlord decides to stick with his N1.5M house rent, i cannot be paying that. I even stopped using my car to go to the office for the major part of last year and nothing work. There is also funds for parents and maybe to assist siblings once in a while. Anyway my only plan this year is to setup a side hustle which i will train my wife on that can earn us something good this year.

I look forward to good news from you later in the year.
