SOUTHERN INDIANA – A winter storm arrived Sunday morning in Southern Indiana, blanketing roads with snow ahead of a potential wintry mix later in the day.

Road conditions were expected to worsen Sunday with up to 8 inches of snow predicted for the area.

The Floyd County and Clark County emergency management agencies issued  travel advisories Sunday. According to the agencies, "only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations, is recommended, and emergency action plans should be implemented by businesses, schools, government agencies, and other organizations."

Gov. Eric Holcomb activated the Indiana Department of Homeland Security State Operations Center on Sunday to respond to the winter storm along with Indiana National Guard highway assistance teams.

On Saturday, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear declared a State of Emergency for the state ahead of the winter storm, which is expected to be followed by brutally cold temperatures after precipitation quits falling Monday.

Some wrecks were reported Sunday including on Interstate 64 West in Jefferson County, Kentucky and Interstate 71, north and south, in Oldham County. I-71 South was blocked at about 10:40 a.m. near mile-marker 15 due to a crash.

TARC service in Southern Indiana was suspended Sunday afternoon due to interstate access being blocked.
