Congratulations to this week’s Rising Star, Tymiara Jakes!. Tymiara is a senior at George Washington Carver High School with a 4.12 GPA. She is the Class of 2025 Salutatorian, a member of JROTC, National Honor Society, and the Marching and Concert Bands. Also, she is involved with Peace Birmingham and the BCS Superintendent Advisory Team. She leads with determination and creativity.

Cameron Rodgers-Johnson left no crumbs while earning his degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The award-winning composer and arranger, 23, explored every opportunity he could in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Music, playing with the Symphony and Wind Symphony Concert bands, Jazz Combo and Jazz Ensemble, and in the Marching Blazers, becoming a drum major in 2023. Alongside that, Rodgers-Johnson participated in chamber ensembles such as UAB’s Trumpet ensembles and in the Blazer Brass Quintet.

The Alabama Department of Education has narrowed down its 2025-26 Teacher of the Year nominees to four candidates, and three of those are teaching in Birmingham-area schools. The 2025-2026 finalists were selected from among 155 educators across the state who were recommended by district superintendents, principals and colleagues through the rigorous Alabama Teacher of the Year application process.
