New York Historical Expansion Tops Out at 170 Central Park West on Manhattan’s Upper West Side

Construction topped out on April 22 on the Tang Wing for American Democracy, a four-story expansion of the New York Historical at 170 Central Park West on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Designed by Robert A. M. Stern Architects, the 70,000-square-foot addition will yield new gallery spaces, classrooms, an outdoor courtyard, and a rooftop garden. The wing will house an expanded program for the Academy for American Democracy and also serve as the new home for the American LGBTQ+ Museum. It will also contain a compact storage facility for the Patricia D. Klingenstein Library collection. Turner Construction is the general contractor for the project, which is located on the southwest corner of the property along West 76th Street.

Earthwork has begun at 200 West 88th Street, the site of an 18-story residential tower on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Designed by Robert A. M. Stern Architects and developed by Nortco Development, the 215-foot-tall structure will span 114,000 square feet and yield 37 condominium units. The building will also contain ground-floor retail space and enclosed parking spaces on the second level. The property is alternately addressed as 568-574 Amsterdam Avenue and located at the corner of West 88th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.

Wells Fargo’s Multifamily Capital group has arranged $231 million in refinancing for Hawthorn Park, a mixed-income residential tower at 160 West 62nd Street on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The 54-story building contains 339 rental units, including 271 market-rate apartments and 68 affordable units reserved for households earning up to 50 percent of the area median income (AMI). The property is located at the corner of West 62nd Street and Amsterdam Avenue.

Stern Architects with Hill West Architects as the architect of record and developed by Naftali Group, the 209-foot-tall structure will span 154,598 square feet and yield 45 condominium units with an average scope of 3,371 square feet. The building will also contain 2,898 square feet of ground-floor retail space, a cellar level, and 17 enclosed parking spaces. The property has nearly 250 feet of frontage along West 84th Street from the corner of Broadway to the middle of the city block.
