Connectors are used to connect parts of circuits. The connector is typically used when sub-sections may need to be disconnected in the future: power inputs, peripherals, or boards that may need to be replaced.

Connectors have a limited life, and connecting and disconnecting them is what wears out. Data tables usually present this information in mating cycles, and it varies considerably from one technology to another. A USB connector can last thousands or tens of thousands of cycles, while a board-to-board connector designed for use inside consumer electronics can be limited to tens of cycles. It is essential to select a connector with a suitable life for the application.

When a connector is installed on a board or cable, the electrical connections are usually slightly fragile. It is common to provide some voltage shedding to transfer any forces acting on the connector to a more mechanical object than weak electrical connections. Again, there will be some good examples later.
