Ensemble Aedes
France's 17-voice Ensemble Aedes performs music from the Baroque to the contemporary era, emphasizing the latter. The group is notable for its frequent performances of works in staged or semi-staged programs.
Ensemble Aedes was formed in 2005 by Mathieu Romano, who remained its director as of the early 2020s. The name comes from the Aedes, bardic storytellers of Greek mythology, not from that of the Aedes family of mosquitoes (whose name means unpleasant or odious). The group has 17 core singers but may expand to larger dimensions as repertory requires. The group's repertory ranges from Baroque music to the contemporary era and also diverges into non-classical genres such as the French chanson and flamenco music; the ensemble appeared on the album Brel & Barbara: A Cappella in 2018. Ensemble Aedes appeared on various operatic and ballet recordings with historical performance groups Le Cercle de l'Harmonie and Les Siècles before releasing its debut as a primary artist, Majesté: Lalande, in 2018 on the Alpha label; the album featured music by Baroque composer Michel-Richard de Lalande.
Ensemble Aedes has performed at many of France's top orchestral and operatic venues, including the Philharmonie de Paris, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, the Paris Opera, and the Opéra Comique, as well as at the Vienna Konzerthaus. The group is in demand at festivals such as those in Aix-en-Provence, Besançon, and Vézelay (the Rencontres Musicales). A notable feature of the group's performances is the frequency with which they are accompanied by staging; to this end, Romano and the choir collaborate with figures from the worlds of dance, drama, and the visual arts. Ensemble Aedes has participated in various outreach projects, including, in the 2022-2023 season, a new Pôle Regional d'Art Vocal at Saint Riquier Abbey in northwestern France. The choir has continued to record for the Aparte label, releasing a recording of Stravinsky's Les noces and a choral adaptation of Ravel's Bolero on that label in 2023.
