Samuel Hasselhorn

Baritone Samuel Hasselhorn has been widely heard on operatic and concert stages since winning the 2018 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Belgium and other major prizes. He has released several albums on the Harmonia Mundi label. Hasselhorn was born in Göttingen in central Germany's Lower Saxony state on May 15, 1990. His father is the psychologist Marcus Hasselhorn. He studied opera performance at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover with Marina Sandel, and taking a semester abroad at the Conservatoire de Paris, working with Malcolm Walker. He took master classes with Thomas Quasthoff, Kiri Te Kanawa, Anne Le Bozec, and other singers. In 2014, he released an album, Nachtblicke, on the Classic Clips label. By the mid-2010s, Hasselhorn was landing major roles, including the lead in Viktor Ullmann's Der Kaiser von Atlantis at the Opera Studio of France's Lyon Opera during the 2015-2016 season. He was invited back the following year to play Masetto in Mozart's Don Giovanni. He also racked up several major prizes, including first prizes at the 2013 International Schubert Competition in Dortmund, Germany, the 2015 Young Concert Artists Auditions in New York, Das Lied International Song Competition in Heidelberg, Germany, in 2017, and the Queen Elisabeth Competition the following year. From 2018 to 2020, Hasselhorn was a cast member at the Vienna State Opera. Hasselhorn made a series of increasingly prestigious concert debuts in this period. During the 2017-2018 season, he made debuts at Wigmore Hall in London and the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, and in 2018-2019, he appeared at the Bozar in Brussels, the Barbican Hall in London, and the Theater an der Wien. By the early 2020s, Hasselhorn was in high demand among both opera companies and concert presenters. He appeared under conductor Daniel Barenboim as Count Almaviva in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro at the Staatsoper Berlin, as Pelléas in Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande at the Staatstheater Nürnberg, as Harlekin in Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos at La Scala in Milan, and at other major houses. He made a return recital appearance at Wigmore Hall and appeared at the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin and at venues in Padua, Cambridge, and Bayreuth, Germany, among other cities. Hasselhorn made his debut at the Musikverein in Vienna with the Vienna Symphony in Britten's War Requiem in 2021, under conductor Ivor Bolton. Signed to the Harmonia Mundi label, Hasselhorn released the album Schumann: Stille Liebe in 2020, following that up with Schubert: Glaube, Hoffnung, Liebe in 2022.
