QUESTION MARK AND THE MYSTERIANS

On November 3, 2008 I began creating Retro:Kimmer. I wanted to feature a playlist of my favorite songs from the 60's. The very first song I added to my Retro playlist was 96 Tears.

Zooming forward for a minute.. In 1989 2 of my friends and I went camping near Grand Haven, MI. From the moment we got there it poured rain. Being in a tent during endless down pours was depressing. We ventured into town and found a little bar there and partied there until the bar closed.

While at this bar we met the Mysterians. We hung out with them all night. The drummer I think told me about Question Mark and told many fun stories about their adventures after 96 Tears went to number 1. He told me that Question Mark really has a ? on his driver's license. We thought that was totally cool.

Question Mark and the Mysterians were an American garage/rock band formed in Bay City, Michigan, in 1962. Light years ahead of their time, they influenced millions of young rock bands to come.

Their number 1 hit was "96 Tears," recorded in 1966 would go on to sell over one million copies and receive a BMI award for over three million airplays. Rudy Martinez, the lead singer, legally changed his name to Question Mark (?). Question Mark and the Mysterians was perhaps the first band to be described as punk rock, and also may be the first Latino rock group to have a general audience hit record in the United States.

The group named itself after the 1957 Japanese science fiction film The Mysterians, in which aliens from the destroyed planet Mysteroid arrive to conquer Earth.

Question Mark’s excentric behavior helped to briefly establish the group in the national consciousness. He claimed (and still claims) to be a Martian who lived with dinosaurs in a past life, and he never appears in public without sunglasses.

On January 10, 2007, a fire destroyed the home of Question Mark on his farm in Clio, Michigan, taking all of his priceless memorabilia and also taking the lives of his beloved breeding dogs (Yorkies). Benefit shows have been held around the country with Question Mark performing at some of these events.

The Mysterians (without Question Mark) still play live around Michigan and are now playing events around the country. Ironically, the fire has caused a wave of renewed interest in Question Mark.

A documentary film about them is slowly being assembled by longtime friend and photographer Terry Murphy, who runs the official website for Question Mark and the Mysterians .

The working title for the film is Are You For Real. It will include footage from their forty years in the music business—from 1966 to the 1997 reformation and up to the present.

RETROKIMMER INTERVIEWS MYSTERIAN BOBBY BALDERRAMA!

Robert Lee Balderrama
Photo: Underground Bee

Robert "Bobby" Balderrama, born in O'Donnell, Texas, grew up in Saginaw, Michigan, is the lead guitarist for the band Question Mark & the Mysterians. Bobby told me they all wrote their hit song 96 Tears. He later played with Joe King Carrasco, the Crowns on the Bandido Rock album of 1987, and now fronts his own Smooth Jazz Band Robert Lee Revue.

Robert Lee with Ibanez Guitar

What a pleasure to chat with the amazing Bobby Balderrama the lead guitarist of Question Mark and the Mysterians and currently fronting his band the Robert Lee Revue!

It was so fabulous seeing Bobby play live 4 times in the past year and again on New Year's Eve. As the band was tuning up I shot over to Bobby and asked him to pose for a picture for me. He stopped everything and gave me such a nice shot. I just loved it...

Bobby and I talked at great length about music and we have a lot of guitar heroes in common. The first influence Bobby spoke of was our friend the legendary Detroit Wheels guitarist Jimmy McCarty..

We talked about how when McCarty plays he is lost in his music...Bobby plays the same way. He doesn't see the audience... the guitar becomes part of his body and he just plays......

Robert Lee Balderrama

The second guitarist we chatted about was Carlos Santana. Bobby said it was amazing to watch Santana evolve and invent his own guitar style with Latin influence and yet still really rocks out.

Bobby talks about Santana and Smooth Jazz...

As I do I asked about Bobby's guitars. He played a Mexican Fender Stratocaster on New Year's Eve. He explained to me that Fender makes American and Mexican guitars. Bobby said that his Mexican was less expensive but played just as well as an American Strat.

Bobby on far left with Question Mark and the Mysterians

I always ask lead guitar players who gave them their first guitar.. It seems like it was always their father... Bobby told me that his brother's wife was frustrated when her husband came home late and did an El Kabong on his head with his guitar...! Of course it broke. His brother then gave it to his Dad and then Dad gave it to Bobby! The rest is history...

In 1976 George Benson had the monster hit album Breezin. Bobby heard George play and it inspired Bobby to play smooth jazz. George Benson played with an Ibanez jazz guitar as does Bobby with the Robert Lee Revue.

You can listen to Robert Lee Revue's CD here

Bobby is sending me the Robert Lee Revue CD For the Love of Smooth Jazz and we can't wait to have it! Here is a review of the CD

QUESTION MARK'S HOME FIRE UPDATE

HELP ? REBUILD HIS HOME!

Rock and roll legend loses priceless memories

By Cathy Shafran
VIENNA TOWNSHIP (WJRT) (WJRT) -- (01/13/07)--A Michigan rock and roll legend is sifting through the remains of his Vienna Township home this weekend after a fire destroyed more than 40 years of music history.

For four decades now, he's gone by the name Question Mark and was the frontman for the band Question Mark and the Mysterians.

The group is best known for their song "96 Tears", a garage rock classic recorded in 1966 that reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100

When his Clio area home went up in flames this week, most of the mementos went up with the house -- including the gold record for "96 Tears".

'Q' has been scouring the debris with his longtime manager Luverne Thompson, and his wife Joy ever since dawn broke on the overnight fire.

But while the memorabilia it important, he is desperately searching for the remains of four of his seven Yorkies that he was unable to save from the burning structure.

'Q' says he has no insurance and he's not sure how to recover documentation on some of his lost musical accomplishments, such as the gold record and the BMI award for his three-millionth air play.

He's asking anyone with Question Mark memories to contact him on his MYSPACE page, or write him at his post office box:

is very proud to present The Robert Lee Revue and Robert Lee Balderrama (aka Bobby Balderrama). From bursting on to the music scene in the sixties with hits like ’96 Tears’ with a band that had the uniquely different name of Question Mark & the Mysterians (…it was the sixties after all!), Robert Lee Balderrama now performs Smooth Jazz as The Robert Lee Revue. Members of The Robert Lee Revue are fellow Mysterians cohort Frank Rodriguez on keyboards, Tom Barsheff on saxophone, Dr. Jack Nash on bass and Amy Lynn Balderrama keeps the beat on percussion along with drummer Rudy Levario. The group has fused on a sound that focuses on Smooth Jazz but is reminiscent of George Benson and
Carlos Santana in style.

Robert Balderrama and Frank Rodriguez have experienced both the positives and negatives of the music business during nearly five decades of playing together. The success came very early – as teenage members of Question Mark and The Mysterians they enjoyed a #1 hit in 1966 with “96 Tears” which has been covered by everyone from Bruce Springsteen to the UK’s punk band The Stranglers. This was followed by four more singles on the Billboard charts before the record label they were on went out of business in late 1967. The band recorded on a number of other labels without the success of the earlier hits. They also got poor business advice that cost them the rights to their original recordings.

Robert’s introduction to jazz guitar came early. As a young man he cites Wes Montgomery, Chet Atkins, and Grant Green as early influences. In the 70’s it was Carlos Santana and George Benson. He would practice those styles on his guitar for hours. For the new album Santana was the inspiration for the Latin ingredients, while he drew on Benson for the beautiful low tones on his guitar. “Everybody is influenced by somebody else and Benson has said that he was influenced by Wes Montgomery, so that gave me the idea of putting two styles together that I admire out of respect. When I hear people comment on my sound, it proves that I’m able to come across with what it is that I’m trying to do” states Robert.

RETRO KIMMER AT THE DETROIT MUSIC LEGENDS SHOW!

Scott Morgan's flyers photo: Alex Sing

Well we did it! After a month of sorting through Scott Morgan's valuable stash of rock history we loaded up my jeep and sped off to Gibraltar Trade Center in Taylor, Michigan.

Scott Morgan and Retro: Kimmer photo: Alex Sing

My crew included Drummer Al King the fantastic salesman extraordinaire, Emcee Stanley T. Madhatter, my very talented daughter Lesley and her fab photographer friend Alex Sing.

We sold a bunch of items. Lots of posters, flyers and one of a kind snap shots too. From even before the doors opened we were busy with customers. We were trying to set up and take money at the same time.

Lesley spent hours making buttons for the fans. She sold quite a few. We made Think Rational buttons as we couldn't locate Scott's missing box of Rats buttons. Hope to find them someday! The buttons are so cool.

Question Mark

Finally met Question Mark and spent some time chatting with him back stage before his show. He told me all about the lady who makes his stage outfits. This shirt was fantastic!

John Troutman and Kimmer photo: Alex Sing

Met John Troutman a pal from Facebook. He was so great! He bought a ton of posters and stuff! And drum roll plz.... he has a huge Radio Birdman tattoo! Knew we liked him! Came home and emailed Deniz Tek about it! Frijid Pink is a Detroit area hard rock/blues band formed in 1967, best known for their version of "House of the Rising Sun," released in 1969.  The initial line-up of the band included drummer Richard Stevers, guitarist Gary Ray Thompson, bassist Tom Harris, lead singer Tom Beaudry (aka:Kelly Green), and later added Larry Zelanka as off-staff keyboardist.

Our friend Jim Randolph played guitar with Pink too! They had the most fantastic booth in the whole show! Hot Pink and black. Just gorgeous. Rick gave me a think pink button which I love. Bobby Balderrama is a fantastic musician. He has played guitar with The Mysterians since he was 13 years old. He has also played with Joe "King" Carasco and The Robert Lee Band and now fronting The Robert Lee Revue. Got to meet Bobby and he was so very nice. Scott went to see him as they have known each other for many years. Scott knows positively everyone!

Nick A. Marinelli (The original Shades of Blue lead singer) was born in Detroit, and he spent his early years in Detroit's northwest Italian neighborhood. The family moved to California for a short time and in the '50s, moved back to Livonia, Michigan, where Nick attended Emerson Jr. High. At this time, Nick hooked up with some guys who were into street-corner Doo-Wop. That's when things took off. Back then they called themselves "Little Bow & The Arrows," singing at local schools and small teen clubs. In the late '50s and early '60s, while attending Franklin High in Livonia, Nick got serious about music. Nick, Bob Kerr, Ernine Denai and Dan Guise renamed the group "The Domingos."

OH how happy I was to see them perform!!!

Thank you Scott, Al, Lesley, Hatter (RIP), and special thanks to Ms. Alex Sing for the photos!

SUITABLE FOR FRAMING: HATTER'S POSTERS

POSTER ART BY GABE HEISS

Here is my small tribute to Hatter on my living room wall. This frame originally held my autographed Question Mark and the Mysterians poster. Great poster of Q and a lovely gift from Skid n Carrie (Marx). But Hatter needed to be on that wall. We will get a new frame for Q's poster asap, but for now Hatter looks at me each day as I make coffee and recline on the couch.

Made a little collage in Photoshop. Nothing particularly skilled just something to let the viewer see a bit of our partnership over the past year and a half.

I have these two posters and plan to frame them for my birthday.

This is the second version (maybe third or fourth) of Chris Taylor's Ann Arbor Rock n Roll Revival show which I promoted last December 18, 2009. Dennis Thompson was originally the subject of this poster but had to drop out so the artist Carl Lundgren recommended using Hatter instead. We did use it and it is a very cool poster...

Here is Hatter with his favorite of Carl Lundgren's posters. The poster is Hatter's favorite from thefamous Cinderella Ballroom gig introducing the J Geils band at their height of popularity . So glad we got this photo in 2009 Flintstock. Hatter gave me this poster I think in 2009. The top hat and outfit are "powder blue". A point Hatter never grew tired of sharing with me.

ROBERT LEE REVUE SHOW WAS FANTASTIC!!

Robert Lee Balderrama

Last night was amazing... I went out to the Chelsea Street Fair in Chelsea, Michigan to see my friends Robert Lee Balderrama (Bobby Balderrama) and his lovely wife Amy Lynn. It was my first time seeing Bobby front his own Smooth Jazz band. Bobby's true love in music is smooth jazz...and he plays it VERY WELL...

The Robert Lee Revue Robert Lee Balderrama lead guitar...Jack Nash on Bass...Tommy Barsheff on Saxophone...Rudolph Levario on Drums... and our favorite keyboard man.. Frank Rodriguez.. The best players.....

Robert Lee Balderrama, aka Bobby Balderrama, renowned guitarist of Question Mark and the Mysterians has delivered yet again - an original and imaginative work . . . a passionate and highly-flavored Smooth Jazz album entitled, FOR THE LOVE OF SMOOTH JAZZ, from his new band ROBERT LEE REVUE.

Each track has its very own unique vibe, setting that 'smooth' mood, which leaves you feeling kissed by a warm ray of sunshine and cooled by a wet splash of salty-air breeze from the seashore.

Featuring a precise blend of fluid guitar riffs, with complementary elements of keyboard and saxophone, leaves listeners wanting more. SANTA CRUZ, the first single to radio, is reminiscent of classic George Benson, whilst album tracks SALVAME and SAMBA NIGHTS reveal a Carlos Santana Latin influence.

Watching this show...the musicians were filled with the joy of playing... it was totally contagious.. The crowd kept growing and growing...This was one cool cat...I was drawn to his playing by the way he just hung back and rode the rhythm with Rudy's drumming... no sweat..

Tommy Barsheff

Frank Rodriguez

Frankie is coming out with a new hot sauce! Little Frankie's Tears.. We can't wait to try it.. Named after a song about Frank from back in the day...

FLINTSTOCK ROCK ART EXHIBIT WITH CARL LUNDGREN STANLEY T MADHATTER AND ? MYSTERIANS

A second exhibition Graphic Beauty: Contemporary Rock and Roll Posters, organized by the FIA and guest curator John Shipman, (here is John pointing out the most memorable displays to Kimmer) explores the resurgence of the silk-screened rock-poster by contemporary national and international artists. These works represent a kaleidoscope of styles by artists who are reviving the eye-popping art of the “gig Poster.

Opening on the same day were two new exhibitions. Flashback: Posters from the Golden Age of Rock and Roll organized by the Flint Institute of Arts from the collections of Wolfgang’s Vault and Jack Bodnar. Strong design, psychedelic colors and powerful imagery combine to create a work of art representative of both the graphic artist and the musician. These posters designed from 1966-1973, represent a unique marriage of what graphic artists were exploring and what direction the musicians were taking. Original concert posters for The MC5, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, The Who, The Grateful Dead and many others will be on display.

Art, Love and Rock & Roll! Flintstock featured 7 live bands throughout the day along with a massive display of Art and Posters from back in the day and new poster artists from today. We enjoyed the many talented artists and crafters inside the gallery as well as the Starbucks booth! We did visit the museum shop and purchased authentic Rock and Roll memorabilia.

We particularly loved Burkey the wood crafter that had the most gorgeous wooden book covers, sculptures, jewelry and shoulder straps. We loved his wide variety of earrings (no brainer) go see more on Burkey HERE

Both exhibitions will run from September 26 through November 8. Classic films that capture the mood and spirit of the era will also be shown in the FIA theaters during the day long festival.

The Flint Institute of Arts is located just two blocks off the exchange of I-475 and 69 in the Cultural Center Park between UM-Flint and Mott Community College. For information call (810)234-1695 or Flintarts.org

Here is an awesome Gary Grimshaw poster with the Headliner being the MC5! then Chuck Berry, Sun Ra The Rationals, Dr. John and a ton of fantastic rock legends.

I got to chat briefly with Luvern and ? as he sat down at a table by his
van to sign autographs. I wanted one really bad but the two teenagers
with me had enough and wanted to fly back to Ann Arbor. I loved watching
Question Mark sing and the original line up was fantastic as well.

Here is my Flintstock day kinda sorta....
