HSE Audit
The audit is a systematic, objective, documented and independent evaluation to determine whether, the activities conforms to the requirements of the occupational health and safety systems and procedures and to assess the efficiency of health and safety programs, verifying the availability and implementation of elements of occupational health and safety systems and the system’s ability to meet the established safety objectives.
Specific audits can be carried out in areas identified based on the general Occupational Health and Safety Audit or in the high risks operations or when there is a high frequency of accidents.
Audit Goals.
Audits are usually performed to meet one or more of the following objectives:
- To give the auditee the opportunity to evaluate its own OH&S framework against a standard OH & S system and find areas for improvement
- To assess the implemented OH&S system's compliance with defined specifications, so as to identify areas for improvement. and
- To meet legal requirements.
Audit Objectives.
Occupational Health & Safety audits are conducted with the following objectives:
- To determine all possible hazards in a systematic and critical manner including personnel, plant, services and operating methods; and
- Ensuring that the OH&S framework meets all legal specifications; and
- those of the company’s written safety policies, objectives and program.
Legal Audit requirement / Obligation on employer.
Across the world including in India, various standards have been formulated for industrial audits to evaluate the adherence of statutory as well as organization requirements concerning Occupational Health and Safety.
As per state factories rules such as Gujarat Factories Rules 1963;
- internally once in a year by a team of suitable plant personnel;
- externally once in two years by a competent agency accredited in this behalf;
- in the year when an external audit is carried out, internal audit need not be carried out;
- The occupier, within thirty days of the completion of the audit, shall send a report to the Chief Inspector with respect to the implementation of the audit recommendations.

- Audit as per National & International standards/specifications (ISO 45001:2018, IS 14489:2018, IS 15793:2007, Gujarat Factories Rules 1963).
- A general occupational Health & Safety audit aiming improvement at project site or in industry.
- A special audit for gap assessment, in case any contractor is unable to cope-up and match with the client's/owner's Health & Safety management system.
