Whentheautomaticstart/stopfunctionisactivatedtheenginemayshutoffoncethevehicleisata standstill,theenginerestartsautomaticallyasthedriverreleasesthebraketodriveoff. Intheseenginestopphasesthetransmissionoilpumpisnotdriven,thusthefluidpressuresupply ceases,thegearshiftelementsopen,andthereisnolongeratransferofpowerinthetransmission. Maximumtransmissionoilpressureisrequiredinorderforthedriveoffprocesstotakeplacedynamicallywithoutanoticeabledelaywhentheautomaticstart/stopfunctionisactivated.However,themechanicallydriventransmissionoilpumpcannotbuilduppressurequicklyenoughwhiletheengineis starting. 24

ThesolenoidisactivatedanddeactivatedbytheEGS.Acorrespondingwiringharnesstothehydraulic pressureaccumulatorislaidinsidethetransmissionhousing. Thecylinderofthehydraulicpressureaccumulatorisconnectedtothetransmission'shydraulicsystemdirectly(withoutanyvalvesbetweenthem).Thehydraulicpressureaccumulatorinfactcontains anelementwhichfunctionsasathrottleandnon-returnvalve.Thethrottlelimitsthevolumetricflowof thefluidwhilethehydraulicpressureaccumulatorisbeingfilled.Ingeneral,thisfillingoperationcorrespondstothechargingoperationoftheaccumulatorwhichiswhytheexpressions"charging"or"discharging"areusedinthisdescription. Thenon-returnvalveensuresthatthetransmissionfluidflowsintothehydraulicpressureaccumulatorviathethrottleduringcharging.Thetransmissionfluiddoesnotflowthroughthethrottleduringthe dischargingprocess,thenon-returnvalvenowopensinsteadtoallowanunrestrictedflowoftransmissionfluidbackintothehydraulicsystem.Thepurposeofthenon-returnvalveisthereforenottomaintainthepressureinthechargedstate.Inthechargedstate,thetransmissionfluidinthehydraulicpressureaccumulatorisdepressurizedandtheenergyisstoredinthetensionedspring.
