    To create a shattered text effect in Illustrator, first convert text to outlines so it is a group of separate letter objects. Then draw dividing lines across the letters and use the Pathfinder palette's Divide function to cut the text into pieces along the lines. Finally, ungroup and separately move each piece to shatter the text.

    Shattered Text In Adobe Illustrator

    Create the Text & Convert to Outlines

    A recent request in the discussion forum inspired this tutorial on how to create a shattered text effect in Illustrator CS. Using the pathfinder palette, you can shatter the text. Create your text. Click the selection tool to get a bounding box around the text, then go to Type > Create Outlines. This makes a group of separate objects of the letters.

    Draw Lines Across the Letters

    Using the line tool, draw lines across the letters that will be used to divide the text into pieces. Select all of the lines and the text by dragging around them with the selection tool.

    Pathfinder Divide

    Open the Pathfinder palette ( Window > Pathfinder ) and click the Divide button. Illustrator will use the lines to divide the text into pieces.

    Ungroup and Separate the Sections

    Go to Object > Ungroup, and then select each piece separately and move it away from the other pieces to shatter the text.
