6a. Naming Covalent Compounds
In naming covalent compounds, 1. Write the full name of the first non-metal 2. Write the half name of the second non-metal then add ide 3. Use prefix before the second element to tell the number of that atoms present.
(Sometimes the first element uses prefix if there are more than one atom per molecule)
e.g. CO2 = carbon dioxide CO = carbon monoxide SO2 = sulphur dioxide SO3 = sulphur trioxide
Practice:
Names phosphorus pentachloride nitrogen dioxide carbon tetrachloride Formulas PCl5 NO2 CCl4
phosphorus trichloride
carbon tetrafluoride
PCl3
CF4
If two vowels appear together, drop the first one. e.g. CO = carbon monooxide = carbon monoxide
