Thank you to SO MANY parents for coming to Interview night! Wow! It was wonderful to touch base!

This week in FLK-3: We began looking at Our Community And We had a blast Hibernating!
In Language: We learned two new sounds Dd and Gg. We worked on taking the confusion out of differentiating b from d and p from g. We used visuals:

We began a unit on Our Community. We discussed several London community workers and what materials they need to do their job. We read books, did crafts and learned many facts about hibernation in preparation for our Hibernation Day on Friday. We read fiction and non-fiction books. We used our nonfiction glove to discuss facts learned or the non-fiction glove to discuss characters, setting, problem, steps to solution and the ending. Our Star Students this week Vanessa M. and Madison..thank you to both of you! Well done! In Gym: We played Hibernation themed games. We played Wake up and Hibernation. Mrs. Debicki taught us 2 new games: one with mats set up like dens where pairs of children had to crawl into the den without knocking it down, ahem! and a hibernation relay where the children had to get the food (a beanbag) into the den ( mat). Hilarious! In Religion: We celebrated Special Times as well as the Community in our classroom with our Hibernation Day. In Science: We had a small group of researchers: Sydney, Hayden and Nate, research and teach us all about 4 different bears the grizzly, the panda, the brown bear and the polar bear. We did some experiments with a fan and a blanket and with ice and mittens to help us understand why bears go into shelters to hibernate and why they grow a fat layer and thicker fur. We put a folded newspaper bear in cold water and watched little happen. Then we put a similar bear in hot water and watched it unfold to help us understand that the warmer temperatures stimulate hibernating animals to wake up. We put a gummy bear in water and watched it expand overnight. In Fine Motor Development: We used small and large curved and straight lines to build and print Dd and Gg. The craft table was a variety of hibernation activities. The biggest motivator to use the scissors this week was to make our own horns, ears, tails and wings to be an Ellacorn or a Unicorn!

In Art: Art this week mixed in with Religion and Remembrance Day. We practiced our cutting skills by cutting out poppies for remembrance. We talked about how we can be the instruments of Gods peace by being bucket fillers. All of the children then shared their ideas of how they can be peaceful. In Music, Drama and Dance: We combined our hibernation theme with the Gummy Bear dance. We played a dance video and the children had to fallow the choreography. They did an excellent job! During activities the children have been assuming characters and being doing their own dramatic performances all week. In Music this week for lunch and classics we have been listening to Bach Cello Suit number 1. In Mathematics: We counted up to 45 days of school using various visuals and manipulatives. We practiced different ways of showing numbers, including our number line this week. As a group, we measured the height and circumference of a teddy bear and then individually we measured the length of a puppet. We patterned using gummy bears and bear counters. We found the capacity of a polar bear by covering it with cotton balls. We tallied and then graphed the colors of gummy bears handed out to each of us. In Personal and Social Development: We had a visit from Baby Millie this week. The topic was on crying. We talked about how when babies cry they are trying to communicate. Crying babies are not bad babies and no matter how frustrated you may get with a crying baby it is never okay to shake a baby. Mr. and Mrs. P were awesome and answered all of our questions about baby Millie. In Inquiry/Directed Play: Miss Evans continued with individual interviews to determine their individual SMARTS. We had a conversation about Hibernation and what happens to a bears heartbeat. A bears regular heart will beat between 40-50 times a minuet. During hibernation a bears heart will beat only 8-10 times a minuet.
