This week in FLK-3 Thank you to sooo many who were able to join us for Interviews!

It is because of your continued parental support that your children are blossoming!
We celebrated the opening of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games.Go Canada Go!
In Language: Having finished introducing and practicing the 25 sounds of the alphabet, we broke into smaller, more task specific groups. The 2nd years worked on the vowel digraphs ai and oa and learned two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking and says its own name. We began blending these sounds to read words. The 1st years were working on learning either: the letters and/or sounds or the correct printed formation of the letters. Sound booklets were sent home on Thursday for home practice. I realized I have been remiss in sending home the lists of words we are now able to blend as we learn the sounds. I will send those home on Monday. We continued signing in each morning. We continued our unit entitled Look at Me!. We continued working on our scrapbook about our self. This week, we discussed our dreams for what we want to be when we grow up and the flag from our country of origin. We linked both having a dream and the flags of the various countries to the Olympics. Thank you for your help at home with our Homework!! We began a new review of Popcorn words using the Big Cookie Crunch. Mmmmm! Manny the Moose continues to inspire with each sleep over visit! Our Star Students this week were Vanessa M and Peter. Manny was introduced to hair dryers, purses and Barbies at Vanessas house and BIG stuffies and little stuffies and Skylanders at Peters house! Both children shared their toys from home extremely well during activity time! Excellent jobs by both of our Leaders! Never underestimate the power of a STAR day!!! We met with our Buddies and started practicing for our Lip Sync-Off.

Gym: We had Mass on Thursday morning, but had a GREAT gymnastics class on Tuesday. The children started working in groups and making routines using balances, rolls, dismounts and working together. In Religion: We celebrated Mass as a school community. Once again Mr. Kelly and Mr. Matt played their guitars for the closing song. AWESOME!! Science: We enjoyed the beauty of Winter by sneaking onto the forbidden snow hill outside our door! In Fine Motor Development: We are working on forming the letters in our name. Mrs. Hennessey continues to work with several children in small groups to increase fine motor strength and dexterity. In Art: Miss M had the children make Olympic medals for our Olympic Opening March. In Music, Drama and Dance: We listened to the music from our Lip Sync-Off list.Who let the dogs out, Firework, What did the fox say? and Gummy Bear. The children continue to request listening to the soundtrack from Frozen. Miss M had the children watching Gymnastic and Rhythmic Gymnastics and discussing how they move and work together. Miss M encouraged the children to make ribbons to do their own Rhythmic gymnastic dances in the class. In Mathematics: We counted up to 99 days of school using various visuals and manipulatives. We finished introducing the numbers 6 to 10. We will consolidate and practice number recognition and counting this coming week and then move on to 2-D shapes. On Wednesday, we will work with Mrs. Murrays and Ms McKinleys class to do some number centres. We would like to celebrate our numbers 1 to 10 and the official 100 days of school by each bringing 100 small snacks ( ex. 100 pieces of popcorn) and combining them to share with the whole class. In Personal and Social Development: The unsettled behavior of last week seemed to dissipate. We only had to remind a few children that when you put a toy down and walk away from it, it becomes fair game for another friend to play with. It is not ours because we had it first.

Miss M reviewed how we should speak to others because how we speak to others affects how they feel. As well as to think of what we are going to say and do before we do it. Miss Ms Fast Five badges for the first five children ready for recess were a hit. In Inquiry/Directed Play: Miss M continued discussing emotions and feelings with the children. She showed the children various pictures and had them discuss What would happen if? The COZY CORNER was well used this week.
