Potential Function :: To Solve Potential Flow Problems

Potential flow problems can be solved using the superposition of elementary flows like uniform flow, source, sink, and doublet. The method of images can be used to account for ground effects by constructing image vortices that make the normal velocity at the wall equal to zero. To solve problems using this method: (1) draw image vortices in positions that satisfy the boundary condition, (2) find the induced velocity at the point of interest due to all real and image vortices, and (3) compute the stream function at any point using the strengths and positions of the vortices. An example is provided to illustrate the process.

Potential Function ( ):
Definition: Characteristic:
u=
and v = y x v u

It always satisfies the irrotationality (i.e., z = x y = 0 )

Physical meaning: = constant is a potential line Streamline and potential line are orthogonal to each other

Potential Flow:
o!erning e"#ation:
$ = 0 or $ = 0
