Basic and Applied Researches

Charlene Faeeza

Basic Research
In the purest form, basic research is conducted solely for the purpose of theory development and refinement.

Objective of this research is to expand mans knowledge, not to create or invent something. Involves the process of collecting and analysing data/information to develop or enhance theory.

Basic research is used to explore the fundamental bases of behavior, without regard to how those bases are manifested in the real world. Basic research aims to explain, predict, and describe fundamental bases of behavior. Researchers are constantly challenging and queationing existing theory.

The case (example)

A person questions himself why everytime he jumps, he will fall back down. After he done a basic research on Newton's theory, now he knows the reason why he keeps on falling down after jumping.

The case (example)

Ivan's behaviourist theory has been refined by Skinner. Possibly Skinner has used basic research in order to improve Pavlov's theory. Edward Thorndike and Ivan Pavlov (Mok, 2002) studied behaviourism in the 20th century. This work was refined and popularised by B.F. Skinner (Alessi and Trollip, 2001) and gave rise to the behavioural school of psychology and learning

Applied Research
Conducted for the purpose of applying, or testing theory and evaluating its usefulness in solving problems. Example:- Applied researches investigate: - Improve agricultural crop production - Treat or cure a specific disease Designed to solve practical problems of the modern worlds, rather than to acquire knowledge's sake. Goal: improve the human condition

Examples of applied research in psychology are behavior modification techniques. Behavior modification is when you use a system of rewards to influence someone's behavior. Another example would come from a sales technique of setting a high price on an item and then reducing it for a sale to trick the consumer into thinking he is receiving a good deal.

The case (example)

Problem: Students do not complete their work in class. Theory applied to overcome the problem: Skinner behaviour modification theory. How the theory applied: Teacher gives praises and goodies to students who can finish their work and punishment will be given for those who are unable to finish their work.
