Benets of the ISA Certied Automation Professional (CAP) Program


Since its beginning, ISAs Certied Automation Professional (CAP) program has been identied as a way to enhance credibility and self-image and to encourage life-long learning and professional development. ISAs CAP program benets employers and automation professionals by promoting career development and recognition for individuals, and by providing measurable hiring qualications for managers. The CAP program recognizes and documents an individuals experience, knowledge, and educationand provides an objective, third-party assessment of his or her skills. Employers value the Certied Automation Professional (CAP) program for its development of a better trained workforce, promotion of safe work practices, use as a qualication tool for hiring and advancement decisions, and enhancement of their company image with internal and external customers. Industry managers and leaders in the eld recognize that employing CAPs demonstrates a commitment to a safer and more productive workplace.

ISA Certied Automation Professional (CAP)


CAPs are responsible for the direction, denition, design, development/ application, deployment, documentation, and support of systems, software, and equipment used in control systems, manufacturing information systems, systems integration, and operational consulting. CAPs work in process automation and manufacturing automation industries around the globe.

CAP Eligibility Requirements


To become an ISA CAP you must meet minimum requirements for work experience and education and pass a multiple choice exam. The following are acceptable work experience and education requirements:

If you hold a four-year technical degree:


Four-year academic degree from an accredited educational institution in a technical or technology eld including engineering, chemistry, physics, math, etc.

This is an individual who can talk to a mechanical engineer, an electrical engineersometimes a chemical engineer and a software engineer, and bring all of these things together.

Related work experience, meaning a minimum of ve (5) years of work in the automation eld. One (1) year of work experience means 1,500 hours of active employment. A cumulative total of 7,500 hours of documented work experience is required during the ve-year period prior to your application date. Passing the CAP Associate Recognition Program (www.isa.org/CAP/Associate) exam counts as one (1) year of work experience.

If you hold a two-year degree or do not have a degree:


Related work experience, meaning a minimum of ten (10) years of work in the automation eld. One (1) year of work experience means 1,500 hours of active employment. A cumulative total of 15,000 hours of documented work experience is required during the ten-year period prior to your application date. An Associates Degree in automation, or a related technology, from an accredited educational institution will count as two (2) years of work experience. Evidence of responsible charge position from two (2) work-related references. These should be submitted to demonstrate that the applicant has had at least two (2) years experience in automation in a position of responsible charge. Each reference should be completed and signed by a former supervisor or someone who is in a position to attest to the applicants responsibilities. At least one of the references must be signed by a current or former supervisor.

Certication
