G11 Language B – “The Body” by Stephen King

Oral presentations
Task 1: You are to choose one of the main characters (Gordie, Chris, Teddy or Vern) and
prepare an oral presentation on him.
You presentation should be well-structured and include the following:

1. General introduction to the character (age, appearance, interests, role in book)

2. Family background - and how you believe this affects the character’s behaviour

3. Describe any incidents (either during the story or before) that you believe shape the
character’s development

4. Relationship with the other boys (and how these relationships develop throughout the
book)

5. Your opinion of the character

Task 2: Prepare an oral presentation on what you consider to be the most memorable
scene from the novel.
Make sure you include:

1. What happened in the scene. Use as much detail as possible.

(Start with: “The scene I have chosen is when….”)

2. Why this scene is particularly significant in the book. Here are some ideas:

• Does it change the course of the story?

• Does it change relationships between characters?

• Does it show something new in a character?

• Was something completely unexpected?

• Try to explain why the characters in the scene behave the way they do. Do we
learn something earlier in the book that helps explain their behaviour?

• Anything else you consider important

3. Why you chose this scene.

Did it bring out a certain feeling or emotion in you? Again, be as detailed as possible. Your
ideas should of course be supported by evidence from the novel.
Guidelines

• You should use the notes from the character profiles you have been updating regularly.

• You should use quotes from the book to support your opinion.

• Organise your ideas clearly and include an introduction, main body and conclusion

• Remember that this is not an essay. You should take notes which you can transfer to
memory cards to help you during your presentation. You are not allowed to write an essay
and simply read it out!

• For describing what happens in books and films, in English we use the present tense

• Each of your presentations should be about 5 minutes long.

You will be assessed according to IB Language B oral assessment criteria

Please use these guidelines – they are here to help you.
