Draw a dinosaur

Adapted from Five Minute Activities for Young Learners

Language focus Description, vocabulary: body parts,


numbers, colours, animals, big, small, little, large etc.
Skills focus Listening for details, fluency, accuracy

Equipment needed Coloured pens/pencils, paper,
flashcards, projector etc.

Procedure
Pre-teach/review the target vocabulary (body parts, numbers and
colours) by using flashcards, presentation, matching/memory games etc.
1 Ask the class to take out coloured pencils and paper. Tell them they are going to draw a mystery
animal.
2 Carefully read out the description of the mystery animal one line at a time and repeat if needed (this
can be a dinosaur or any other animal the students have learned recently).
e.g.

Draw a large green body in the shape of an egg.


Draw a short thick green neck.
Draw a green head in the shape of an egg.
Draw two black eyes.
Draw a big red mouth with lots of sharp teeth.
Draw a big green tail like a crocodiles tail.
Draw two thick green legs like the legs of an elephant.
Draw two little green arms.

The bolded vocabulary can be replaced as needed.


3 When you have finished, check the childrens drawings to see that they have followed your
instructions. Ask them to guess what they have drawn. They should have something resembling a
Tyrannosaurus Rex (or your chosen animal).
4 The students pictures can be displayed around the classroom. You could go over the vocabulary
once again (what colour is it?, How many arms does it have? etc.)
Follow-up Ask the children to prepare their own descriptions of a mystery animal. Ask
them, in pairs, to describe their animal for their partner to draw. They should then check that their
partner has understood their instructions. Tell the students that it can be a real animal or something
imaginative
Optional You could use success criteria depending on the age/level/ability of the students
e.g.
a. use numbers b. use body parts c. listen carefully d. describe your animal
