Miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) are designed to protect wiring from overheating and damage from currents that are too high. They trip at rated currents not more than 100 amps and operate thermally or thermally-magnetically. Earth leakage circuit breakers (ELCBs) break the power supply when a fixed amount of current, such as 25-40 mA, flows through the earth line. Based on the fact that all current entering a circuit should equal the current leaving it, ELCBs detect fault conditions when current flows in the earth wire. They are set to operate in 0.65 milliseconds, the safest limit for the amount of current the human body can withstand.

Application of MCBs and ElcBs
Miniature circuit board(MCB):-
It is designed to protect a circuits wiring from
a serious damage which would be caused if it has to carry a current which is too high for the diameter of its wires. Such a current could be easily heat up the wires so much that their insulation and cause short circuit and burn the house. Rated current not more than 100 A. Trip characteristics normally not adjustable. Thermal or thermal-magnetic operation.
Earth leakage circuit breaker(ELCB):-
1. It is a device that breaks the power supply
when a fixed amount of current say 25-40 mA flow through the earth line. 2. It is also called ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). 3. It is a basic fact that, all current flowing to electrical equipment from the power generation station via its supply circuits phase or neutral wire should only return to the power station via that same circuits neutral wire. If there is no fault anywhere in a circuit supplying single-phase, the current flowing to the unit at any instant in the live wire should exactly match the current flowing away from the unit in the neutral wire. Similarly, there should be no current flowing in the units safety earth. If any current is flowing in the ground wire, it must be caused by a fault condition and the supply of current to the circuit needs to be stopped urgently.
Phase (line), Neutral and Earth wire connected through ELCB.
ELCB is working based on Earth leakage current. Operating Time of ELCB: The safest limit of Current which Human Body can withstand is 30ma sec. Suppose Human Body Resistance is 500 and Voltage to ground is 230 Volt. The Body current will be 500/230=460mA. Hence ELCB must be operated in 30maSec/460mA = 0.65msec
