Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration Lab

To find out that Planimal goes through Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration by
observing if it releases oxygen:
Photosynthesis is a process that converts light energy into chemical energy. A byproduct of this process is oxygen.
Cellular Respiration is a process that uses glucose released by photosynthesis and
converts it into energy (ATP) useable to perform various tasks. A by- product of this
process is Carbon dioxide.
Question: Does the planimal The Mighty Green go thorough photosynthesis and
Cellular Respiration?
Hypothesis: I think that the planimal does undergoes both photosynthesis and
cellular respiration because it contains chlorophyll (is green in color) which is
essential for photosynthesis to occur and will release oxygen since its a byproduct
of the process. The plant would be required to take up carbon dioxide (cellular
respiration) for photosynthesis to occur.
Materials Required:
-

2 Jars of the same size

Planimal The Mighty Green
2 Candles
Timer
Lighter (to burn the candles)

Procedure:
1. Light the two candles using a lighter.
2. Place your planimal beside one of the candles.
3. Cover both candles with the jars at the same time making sure one consists
of the planimal inside it and one being alone and start the timer immediately.
4. Observe the time and note down when each candle stops burning.
5. Conduct the experiment one more time for better and more accurate results.
Observations:
Jar with Planimal
Jar without the
Planimal

Try 1
154
45

Try 2
120
50

On an average, The Candle in the Jar with the planimal stopped burning in 137
seconds whereas the Candle in the Jar without the planimal stopped burning in 47.5
seconds.

Conclusion: The Planimal The Mighty Green undergoes photosynthesis as it

produces oxygen as a byproduct. This can be confirmed because if the jar with
planimal didnt have oxygen, it wouldve stopped burning at the same time as the
other one. Presence of oxygen is required for a candle to keep burning, and the
Candle in the jar with the planimal burned for a longer period of time because it had
oxygen. This proves that our planimal does go through the process of
photosynthesis. Our planimal also undergoes cellular respiration as it uses the
carbon dioxide released by the candle to convert it into oxygen and then the oxygen
allowing candle to keep burning. Both of the processes work together in a cycle in
order for The Mighty green to generate useful energy that helps it perform the tasks
its required.
The rate of photosynthesis is impacted by different conditions in the planimal. If
more sunlight and water are taken by the planimal, photosynthesis occurs faster
and more oxygen is produced. If more carbon dioxide is given to this planimal, it
also increases the rate of photosynthesis occurring in it. This carbon dioxide is used
to make sugars in the photosynthesis reaction. The carbon dioxide released by the
candle caused our planimal to take it more carbon dioxide than what was already
present in the air, and release more oxygen which caused the candle to keep
burning for a longer time compared to the one in the normal jar.
